We're a bit tired of moving the Eglu around the garden and them both tearing up the grass.

I plan to move the Eglu towards the back of the garden and leave it in one place. Currently it's a large flower bed covered in bark.

Is there anything I should consider? I was going to level the ground and put tent pegs down.

Just wondered how often you should rake out the bark inside the Eglu? Weekly springs to mind?

Any other tips?

Sounds like a great plan, you will need shade for the girls so be sure to give them plants that they can sit under if it gets to hot or windy/rainy..., we have a dust bath in one corner of ours also which they love. I find the bark chippings great as it encourages bugs which they love to nibble at, we rake ours out and replace twice a year (so far) and of course the other item in our hen house is a bale of straw for them to jump up and down on.

Does that help any?

Hi,

If you are going to site the eglu somewhere permanent, it might be an idea to put slabs down, and then the bedding on top of that?

Makes it easier to clean, and stops rodents as well.

I haven't used bark, we use Hemcore instead. That gets cleaned out every 6 weeks give or take - depending on when I have some free time. The run has to be covered to use this though, otherwise the Hemcore soaks all the rain up. Think i have read Bark could cause health issues?? But someone with more knowledge then I have can tell you if I am right or wrong!

Use a disinfectant as well - we use stalosan (sp) - and garden lime, just to ensure the nasties and the smells are kept at bay as keeping in the same place.

Good luck!
