Guest
Hi I have been putting pellets in low sided dog bowls which worked really well but they are emptying them out slinging it everywhere(feeding frenzy first thing)...by the end of the afternoon they do eat it all off the floor(as I am refusing to replenish it),,about 5ish i give them any old leftovers etc but then thats it...which they do enjoy But although i have the grub with my cube cant see without making an adaptation to hang it onto anything the hangers on the back are rubbishly low and short. So I was going to get a plastic feeder to hang up on wire/threadetc ....should this stop them slinging it around?? OR I would really like a covered galvanised feeder£££ but can see them doing the same here I really dont think the grub is well designed for hanging on WIRs..I have already had to change the ladder to wooden version Any ideas much appreciated thanks indie
The Dogmother
I have two solutions (after many tries). I use a plastic gravity hanging feeder and an Omlet Glug. Both stop them from climbing in/flicking the feed out and they can all get around it too. A few people have mentioned to me that they find that galvanised feeders 'flavour' the food and their hens don't like it. Now I know this is true of metal drinkers, but I've never heard until recently that it can taint the feed too. Plastic feeders are easy to clean and cheaper too; I have two, one in use and one being washed.
Guest
Thanks Claret I will get the plastic feeders today, I do use a galvanised water drinker that i had from my ducks and so far they are fine with it...after all the rummaging they do I am sure they can tell if anything is tainted at all, but i read that somewhere else too?Mine drink out of it really well Thanks I will have to work out how to fix the grub to the Wir(I know someone went to ikea and got a rail will have to look in DIY as ikea is a bit of a trek out..the brackets on the back of the grub are very shallow). thanks indie
mrsnapalm
I have attached the grub and glug to my WIR using what I can best describe as a 3' length of giant meccano which I got from B&Q. I screwed through the small holes in the metal strip to attach it to the uprights of the run and the grub and glug hang on it perfectly. meezers
If you go into Tescos , you will find my 'feeders' . I bought a couple of their cheapie plastic peg baskets (about £2 something ), they have little clips so you can clip them to the run mesh at whatever height you want, and an empty 500g margarine tub fits in perfectly to hold the pellets. Even better, my 6 chooks eat almost exactly that amount in a day.
Patricia W
you can't post a pic, can you - so I know what to look for in Tesco's?
meezers
you can't post a pic, can you - so I know what to look for in Tesco's? It takes me ages to fiddle around and load photos. If you go to the homeware /kitchen section - in our store they are in the aisle with doormats, cookware, utensils etc, the baskets are roughly 8 inches by 5 inches ( from memory ) metallic silver coloured plastic, the handle is blue and has a blue hook/clip attached ( to hang it from the washing line I suppose )the basket also has holes in the side which is why I line it with a 500g margarine tub. Oh, and you get blue and silver pegs with the basket - all for £2 something

Chook n Boo Mum
I couldn't attach my grub, glugs & super glugs to my WIR either. Managed to get the super glugs to fit by attaching a cable tie to the weldmesh loosely so the silly little lugs have something to hang on. I now hang the grubs on a piece of the fox-proof skirt, as it is no longer needed on the cube run, which I also attached to the WIR at an angle with cable ties. I'll post piccies once I have a working camera....!! Sha x
