MadMitch
By a Buzzard. It picked her up but she struggled like mad and fell outside the electric fence. She tried to get back through the fence then got a shock (poor girl). She managed to fly back over and under the shelter and the buzzard flew off. I have checked her over and apart from losing quite a few feathers she doesn't seem to have a mark on her and there is no blood or anything. I can only assume that it didn't manage to get its talons in. Its a good job it was Gwyneth as she is my biggest girl and a lot heavier to lift. cluckbok
My goodness! How scarey!! I'm glad she made it to safety!!
Gamebird
Poor Gwyneth. I didn't think Buzzards took live prey. I always thought they preyed on carrion unless they were really hungry and have been known to prey on vulnerable lambs. When the buzzards fly over my chickens they run into their shelter but I shall be keeping a beady eye out in future.
mostin
Wow , that is amazing. And obviously not in a good way . Is Gwyneth a bantam or is she a full sized chook? I see in your sig she is a dorking, but I'm not quite sure what size they are?
jlo
Goodness - I am really sorry to hear that and, like others, find it a bit scarey as we have loads of buzzards round here and I had assumed that they would not actually attack a chicken. The crows in the tree by our drive go completely berserk when the buzzards are around so we do get some warning if they get too close. Egluntyne
Crikey! Poor girl. I hope she will get over the trauma.

I see in your sig she is a dorking, but I'm not quite sure what size they are? Gwyneth is definately a big old girl, around 10lbs I think thats why I got lucky. If it had been one of the welsummer or OEPF it would have been away with her. I just didn't realise that buzzards did that. For the last year we have always put veg netting over the electric fencing as a precaution but it had got all ripped so I didn't put it back on, plus it looks so much better without it on. Its back on now though.

Its back on now though. My goodness! a 10lb chook! We get big birds of prey flying over our garden but the girls always go for cover under the bushes. I'd never worried about it because they aren't bantams though. Now I'm abit nervous . I'm glad you've got your netting back on. I hope Gwyneth is recovering well from her ordeal.
