wooden v eglu - debate on another forum

Recommended Posts

yep I think i will register too..i have had a wood forsham and although nice sturdy product and being a 1 week old cube owner..mine have stacks of room and i cleaned it in a few mins yesterday(most of the poo had fallen into the tray below which was lined with newspaper ) much easier to dry roosting bars. It think any place where wood houses are sold are not going to like omlet products lets face it!

:lol: sandy doesnt know what she is missing

Worth noting that 'Sandy', who made the first reply, is registered as living in Australia. I'd imagine that heat would be much more of a problem down there, as indeed would be providing shade and water. However, how this might be worse in an Eglu or Cube compared to an wooden arc I can't really answer, as I've only ever had a Eglu in England!

To the best of my knowledge, you can't get Eglus in Australia! I say this because I adopted three hens and an Eglu from a couple who were emigrating there. I hear from them every now and then, and send them news about the chooks (sadly only one of whom now remains), they are thinking of keeping chickens and were bemoaning the fact that it will have to be a wooden house.

Well now they want to see a Cube set-up, someone needs to point them to the 'Visit an Eglu' thread on this forum. They don't seem to be aware that Omlet has a forum! I'm not registered on the site but maybe someone will tell them how they can arrange this.

People who dont like Eglus arent so much wrong as different

6BuffRocks on that thread makes, what are for him, fair points, but they simply dont apply to us.

We arent "serious" chicken keepers, and cost probably isnt our main concern, if I was given a choice of spending an hour a week cleaning, or 5 minutes a week cleaning and £500 extra upfront, I'd hand over the cash. If you'd prefer spending the time, thats your choice, I wouldnt, and thats mine.

I must admit, I'd quite like a more traditional coop look though.

Over the years i have had all kinds of different henhouses, converted sheds with huge walk in runs to forsham arks, home built etc,my husband has really spoilt me.I now have a pink eglu and can honestly say its the best i have ever owned, obviously i only keep a few hens ,enough for eggs for the family and great entertainmen!.I did get a cube brieflly, great design etc but too much for our garden and vegetables .Sold very quickly on here so no harm done. Will buy a converter for it on tuesday as will keep the girls confined during the growing season(,they ate my tomato plants!) Eglus?BRILLIANT (pink eglu)

I bought a cube because I totted up how much I've spent on wooden rabbit hutches+runs over the years and I think that overall I would spend less and with less maintenance. Our run with hutch on the top is now 5/6years old and is virtually falling to pieces, despite costing us close to £200 when we bought and and having been faithfully maintained with waterproofing and WD40.

And I don't quite know why 6DuffRocks (is she a Charm City cakes fan?) is so vehemently anti-omlet but I think she's being a bit hash and unfair. The breder of the chickens I'm waiting for is an experienced chicken-breeder and she says the eglus are very good.

Oh am glad after all the troubles you are going to get a new cube, this is good PR for Omlet as its not good for us all to hear that customers are having problems. So great news and got to say I am soo delighted with my (cube green) .

Back to the subject however.....

We may all be domestic back yard keepers and I am sure the majority of us are, I mean thats why we are buying the size housing we have. However I do take my chicken keeping seriously so I cant say why do some folks on the poultry forum think they are some experts in hen housing :lol:

My brother in law is a farmer and he thought it was a great product v functional set up

Perhaps the serious keepers have farms to keep their 10000 of chickens  thats serious

This is a new innovative product and makes backyard chicken keeping possible with keeping down the risk of mites etc and makes it more accessible and easier for lots of people.

Most wooden housing will rot a lot quicker and stay wet a lot longer than plastic...its not rocket science(or perhaps it is..) what do I know :talk2hand::roll:

Delighted to hear your problems are being resolved, CCR!

Just revisited the original thread, and I'm very :? ... why does Field to Fork think that the Eglu is 'French designed' (sic)? As far as I know it's British design and made in the UK.

I'm also frankly horrified at the lady who says red mite is just part of chicken keeping.

Some people will never be convinced.

I suppose the question is have they personally tried an eglu or cube?

As like lots of others I have had wood..it stays wet when you clean it(winter no fun)

it is a good place for bugs to hide and wood worm love it...its a pain to dry and clean lets face it...

they do rot ..mine is in my horses manure heap rotting even better..the wildlife have dug lots of holes under it so I suppose the plus side is all wildlife will love a wooden house...

Unfortunately I am sure its Foxy that is living under the rotting wooden house and is very happy there
