mictogirl
Hi All. Hope someone can advise me if this will work. Since my plan for raised beds has been delayed (long story), this year I am sowing / planting veg in big tubs on my patio instead. So far I've got carrots, beets, lettuce, spring onions and leeks, just hope they all germinate! Anyway, I have germinated inside on my windowsill courgettes (way too many it has to be said!), cucumbers and pumpkins and was hoping when it was time to plant them out I could also do them in tubs? I know eg pumpkins take up a lot of room, but can you train them up a cane wigwam or something? The pumpkins are only a small variety, the courgettes and cucumbers 'normal' size varieties. Does anyone know if it'll work? Thanks in advance, Laura.
Cinnamon
I grew a courgette in a belfast sink last year, with great sucess. Mind you,I seem unable to ever kill a courgette The same sink, which is smallish, not especially deep & has daffodil bulbs in too, is being used for a Q this summer
mictogirl
Thanks Cinnamon, that has given me some hope! I was given a small courgette plant last year which I stuck in a flower bed from lack of anywhere else to put it, and it was devoured by snails / slugs within 2 days Hopefully I'll have better luck with the pots this year! Redwing
My mum grows cucumbers in pots ok - they are about 20cm diameter or more though I am not sure about the pumpkins, you can get ones that grow up teepees but not all will I believe
chickenanne
Both cucumbers and courgettes will be fine in big pots, kept well watered. I've grown them like this before and it's always been really succesful!
Lesley
They should grow well up a wigwam of canes - I grow large cucumbers like that and you've got a small variety of pumpkins...... give it a go!

Valkyrie
One year we went on holiday and came home to find a vine and squash had grown up among the runner beans. I hadn't noticed as the beans were very leafy and dense and we had a bumper crop that year. When I went to pick the beans I found this biggish squash - bigger than my hand, hanging from the pole at about head height. Some old squash seeds had been in the compost and germinated in the trench! I didn't even spot the yellow flowers! So yep, you can grow them up poles alright! Mrs Webmuppet
Cucumbers will grow fine in really big flower pots. LMW always grows her 'pet' cucumbers in them...........most pampered plants ever those cucumbers ( she eats cucumber by the ton )
Valkyrie
Cinnamon - you may as well try it - Bob Flowerdew says that curcurbits do well with beans, nasturtiums, peas and sweetcorn - but hate potatoes.
Cinnamon
Ah, well the peas are in front of the potatoes
Valkyrie
Ooopsie! Had a look with regard to peas - he says they like beans, carrots, turnips, curcurbits and sweetcorn but hate onions and garlic. You might be OK - didn't say they don't like them. I tend to use his chart to squeeze everything in. This year I have tons of space where the girls have got rid of my flowers. And - I have one butternut sprouting whoohoo. It might just get trained up a pole after all.
