A chickychickychick-ENN!!
It's not formal yet, because we can't find a ring! But... we're making tentative wedding plans along the lines of: *Elope to somewhere lovely in the UK for a long weekend. (Southwold has got under our skin!) *Forget about the family, friends, Hi Ho Silver Lining/Agadoo cheesy DJ, and all the other highly expensive codswallop and compromise that goes with the modern wedding. *Just the pair of us. No hassle. All we'll be wanting is a nice venue for a very simple service, a couple of witnesses, some flowers of course, a photographer, and then an afternoon on a lovely, bracing sandy beach with some champagne and a fresh fish barbecue. Or if it rains, a nice hotel for the afternoon. Simple eh? Apart from I'm being a very fussy so-and-so on the ring and dress front and need help with tracking them down. I want something non-trad, under £1000 (way under!) Preferably with an emerald as the main stone and maybe some peridot and something white (not necessarily diamonds) round and about. I like Victorian, Tudor, Art Deco and modern designs. I don't like a big stone in a cluster of diamonds, or solitaires. 18 carat on the OH's insistance. Secondhand or new. Dress wise, I'm a big lass (size 20), and want something simple in green. A pastel olive, sage or pale to medium green, quite floaty and weddingy but not a trad wedding dress. More like an elaborate empire line or tea dress type-thing. Something which could be used again for posh, but something very pretty. And preferably with some sort of cardi or something to go over it. The British coast ain't always warm! Can anyone help me start looking? Ebay is not my friend. Neither is Monsoon. And I thought something small and simple would be easy! bluekarin
Oooh how exciting! http://www.ai1fashion.com/amazing-beautiful-green-evening-dress-really-nice-for-party-evening-out-687-p.asp I know you said Monsoon wasn't your friend but . . . http://www.monsoon.co.uk/invt/45036772&bklist=icat,5,shop,women,dresses,eveningdresses Or maybe, if you're good with the old sewing machine, make it and then you have the style and colour you want. As for the ring, its quite a personal thing so I would look in as many antique and jewellery shops as you can. Look forward to seeing what you choose
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Could it be a sign?! That's my 'other' name! As in I won't be saying:' I, A chickychickychick-ENN!!, take you, OH...' I really like that dress! Thanks Bluekarin. I will consider that strongly! Other ideas still welcome. There's a nice green maxi dress on monsoon but I'm not sure... I want something to cover my cankles. As for rings, I've been trawling a LOT of antique shops, and saw a lovely modern ring, 9 carat, with smoke quartz, citrine and peridot. I asked if it could be replaced with emerald instead of the smokey quartz and zirconia or diamonds instead of the citrines (don't do yellow stones - they don't suit me) and in 18 carat.... basically, the same ring but totally different! Fusspot!
Cinnamon
How exciting As a big girl too, I will keep an eye out for a gorgeous green frock while I am trawling the shops on my weekly clothes hunt You are lucky - there seem to be lots of prom type & evening dresses areound at the moment & lots of green too Super colour for a wedding dress. chickenanne
It sounds LOVELY. For the dress, it seems like you've really clear ideas, so have you thought about going to a dressmaker? I'm sure between you you could come up with a stunning design, and am sure is possible to come up with something on budget, too. Alternatively, try wedding dress shops, but maybe consider bridesmaid dresses as they tend to be a wider range of colours. Even a very expensive wedding dress shop should have bridesmaids dresses that would be well under your budget, and you may find the exact thing. Or try looking in Coast? The bigger stores do some great bridesmaids dresses, though they tend to be strapless and are very much off-the-peg sizes. It's worth trying on tons of dresses as it's difficult to know what will really suit you (unless you have the kind of social life that entails frequent wearing of beautiful floaty long dresses, of course!). Try on lots, even styles and colours you're not interested in, even in price ranges you can't afford: that way if you do go to a dressmaker you'll have very clear ideas. Venue: tricky as I don't know Southwold at all. Possible to rent a self-catering property, maybe something National Trust? No idea how expensive that would be, but am sure you could find somewhere perfect. A ring.... well, lots of jewelers will design one for you, and it's typically cheaper that way. Or else the perfect excuse for trips to jewellery shops and good antique shops. I would go to lots of places around you and try them on. Guest
I'm a size 20, are you tall because I am 6 foot 1" and found a brill (full length) dress for around £300 from an American company. It was actually in their mother of the bride section would you believe! This is it, i was going for an Art Deco era look http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/wedding1.JPG I ordered the dress via my local wedding dress shop, they had the catalogue so your local dress shop may be able to do the same. the company is http://www.foreverbridals.com and I spotted these 2 that might be what you're looking for? http://www.foreverbridals.com/gownpix.asp?Style=87207 http://www.foreverbridals.com/gownpix.asp?Style=88105 I think the 2nd one is particularly lovely and it has the cardi/jacket you wanted! congrats by the way xxxx

Guest
Oh wow Poet, you look AMAZING!!! So 1920s! That's a FANTASTIC outfit! thank you what do you think of the ones I chose for you? Have a look in the mother of the bride section, you can order the other dresses in other colours too! Mine just needed very slight alterations done by the dressmaker that worked for the shop, only cost me £30 for the alterations.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I want a more greeny green and something a bit more girlie I think, but there's lots on the site so I'll have a rummage.
Redwing
Congratulations! Perhaps go secondhand for your ring? I found the perfect one and it was so unique - (unfortunately it was taken in a break in last year ) I am hopeless with dresses but the others are doing a good job, I particularly like the second one Poet suggested Good on you for going away to get married, I wish I had done that - its all so stressful otherwise especially if you have a family at war
Seagazer
Congratulations All I was going to say that the shops are full of green clothes (my favorite) at the moment so it should be fairly easy. I love all the dresses that have been put on links. I think it sounds very romantic going away and getting married quietly.
Guest
I love the idea of a fish BBQ on the beach, maybe something shorter if you're going on the beach or the hem will get ruined, can't wait to see what you choose!
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Oh Redwing! How sad! Some people are unprintable words. Poet - cankles! I need a long dress to cover my cankles (where your calf and your ankles are one tree trunk ) I can always hitch it up!

freddie
My sister and her friend were witness's for a wedding at Tapely Park Instow last yr, and had a great time, they'd not met the B+G, it was all set up via email or somesuch, and they all had a ball, it was in the paper !! As for the ring, there are jewellers here wh'd make whatever you wanted, gold/silver plus stones with ethical diamonds etc, April Doubleday I think is one.Dresswise, honey, I hate clothes shopping, you.re on yr own!! Congratulations, and if I was ever fool enough to do the wedding thing again, (still have a current husband, not trained yet ), I'd elope too!!
