Tempted to try hatching some eggs

Recommended Posts

 I'm very tempted - does anyone know a good book to read (there is one in the omlet shop - a good one?).

Also Omlet used to sell an all inclusive incubator kit but I can't see it in the shop anymore. What do you need/look for in equipment?

What do others do in the event that you hatch out Cockerels? Does it become a major problem to find homes or do some people actively seek cockerels?

Article well worth readig **here**. :D

It is worth remembering that on average around 50% of hatchlings will be cockerels, and that are not that easy to rehome. For example this forum has a policy of not assisting with the rehoming of cockerels.

Those of us who have hatched tend to raise the cockerels for the table. The other way to deal with them is to cull them. If you log on to the Practical Poultry forum, you will find that there is plenty of info and advice there..

The only cockerels that seem to be really in demand are well bred pure breed ones as peoplw ho breed will swap cockerels to avoid them gettng jiggy with the hens related to them

You do get the odd place that will rehome them but that cannot be relied on unless you can line somewhere up ready obviously

You could get sex-linked chicks so you can tell who are boys when they hatch and cull them at hours old or raise them for meat as Egluntine says

I ordered my incubator from http://www.ascott.biz/acatalog/Poultry_Housing_equipment_feeders_drinkers.html

and my book from Amazon, the book seems to be one that other people on teh form have so I went for that one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Incubation-Hatching-Rearing-Katie-Thear/dp/090613725X/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240589858&sr=8-2
