dame egna
Ok, so at the moment I don't have any surplus eggs as I seem to use them most of the time, but when we add two more girls next weekend it'll bring the amount of eggs up to around 40-49 (ish) per week. I never used to buy more than half a dozen per week!!! Am I actually 'allowed' to sell any surplus eggs? I live up a lane, so my thought was perhaps I could pin a sign at the bottom of the lane on the fence stating I have some for sale. Or would I be better of selling them to friends and family? I'm just not sure I know enough people who would buy them on a regular basis - and it doesn't help that my parents are vegan!!!!!!!!!!!! Redwing
You are allowed to sell them 'at the gate' or to peopl you know - there is a long thread about it on here somewhere with useful info - try a search Its surprising how it goes from 'how lovely to have eggs' to 'oh no - we are overrun with the blooming things!' isnt it? Saronne
Hi Loads of us sell surplus eggs (when we have them!) And, from what I have read, it is perfectly okay to sell directly to friends and family - I do. The only thing you're not allowed to do without registering with Defra (someone out there can correct me if I'm wrong) is sell to a shop who then sells on to the public. I guess you could put a sign up, but I prefer word of mouth - then if you have extra to sell, you sell. If not, you don't. Though I suppose you could take the sign away if you don't! P.S. I sell mine for 2.50 dozen or 1.25 for 6. People seem happy to pay that and it compares favourably with store-bought free range/organic (which can be more expensive). ClaireG
I sell some to my inlaws and my husbands work collegues and charge £1 per half dozen.
Cinnamon
Hi, I sell mine for £1.50 for a box of 6, from the gate. I have a couple of regulars, & if I get REALLy swamped then I give the odd box away on Freecycle, which always seems to generate a few sales too. Remember that your new hens may not lay for a few weeks, & that they will have a day 'off' a week too
..lay a little egg for me
The only thing I can add to this is that you are not allowed to sort the eggs by size when you sell them "from the garden gate". From what I have read, putting a sign up on your gate to sell to the public is perfectly legal as long as the eggs aren't sorted. (Correct me somebody if I am wrong)... I read something similar, but it said that eggs you sell to shops (once you've registered with Defra) must be sized and graded - and also a date stamp or something similar given. Saronne
I always give a few large and small eggs so no one gets stuck with only large or small! Saronne x
sophia_chicken
When we have a sudden glut of eggs we put them on freecycle! We always have an overwhelming response and one or two people have said they would like to buy them when we have eggs left over in future! We've also met some lovely people who have come to pick them up! No one ever believes a hen owner that proper free-range eggs taste 100% better than supermarket free range.... until they try them! Incidently we buy lovely coloured egg boxes from ebay and put labels with photos of our hens and a guide to who laid which coloured ones! Everyone loves them! dame egna
I might have to have a look on Freecycle - I don't even know what it is!!! I ordered some boxes off ebay - they are all a bit bland, although my husband can print some labels off at work which will jolly them up a bit. Like the idea of having our own hens on the front...... Do you find people are put off with the coloured shells, or do they like them? My next two hens will lay green and white - I love the green coloured ones, but did wonder if people would think they were off or something?!! Ooooh, and blue shells?????!!!! dancing cloud
Mine are sold at work for £1.00 per six (procees to BHWT) and I always have a queue of boxes waiting to be filled. My customers used to spend ages trying to decide who laid which eggs, particularly those that had met the monsters, and my guess would be they would LOVE coloured eggs. You might just get egg-envy from those who aren't lucky enough to get one !
Martin B
I was quite famed at one point for selling eggs at £1.50 for 4, but that was in the early days, now I am over run with the things. Had 40 odd lying on the table the other day until somebody bought 18 off me. Have gone for 10p and egg now, makes a contribution towards everything, I'm not in it for the money any more, more for the love. I have a job which can pay for everything else. I'd pay extra for coloured ones they're great!! Our girls aren't coloured egg layers but my 3 year old chose them so we had no say in breed!! I use ordinary cardboard egg boxes, but I made up a label with a photo of each of my girls on it with their names and then I write the initial of the chicken who laid the egg with the date on each egg. I sell lots of eggs to the ladies in the choir (who literally fight over them!) and I can hear them all opening the boxes and cooing at all the different coloured eggs and then looking at the photo of who laid it on the box!! They love the different coloured eggs and are more than happy to pay £1.50 for half a dozen. I literally have waiting lists of people wanting eggs!
