Chook n Boo Mum
Phew ! Well done, once they are done the best bit starts, putting them all together! Sha x
TAJ
Just a quick update - all cut out so now the fun begins. I decided to start on the edging squares which are 'square within a square' as they are straight forward. I am not sure I will do them all (52 squares) before attempting a big square, but I thought it would be a good practice, before the more complex squares get started. Plum
Chicken. Only joking I'd do that as well.
TAJ
Chicken. Only joking I'd do that as well. ... well we all have to start somewhere I have done a few more squares - I remembered to turn the auto thing on my sewing machine on so it does either end & cutting thread for me. My machine is so cleaver - it has a piecing stitch - in fact 2 either 1/4" left or right of foot, so you just keep fabric in line with the foot. It has an auto back stitch and cut for the end of sewing. So far (I am only doing squares) all is going well - all I need to do is line it up and press go and at the other end press one button and it back stiches backwards three times, then cuts the thread. When I got this fancy machine I couldn't see I would use the features, so it is good using some - I thought I would always use the 'optional' foot control pedal, but now I am quite happy with the speed control and press button operation on the machine - I don't think I have used the foot pedal for a year at least. bigmommasally
Wow that sounds an impressive sewing machine Tracey - what make and model is it? I have a 30 year old Singer that was my mums. I like reading about your progress with your quilt, have you any pics of your squares for us?
Plum
Now we know your sewing machine is doing it all for you we're not so impressed. I thought mine was clever having a needle threader now I see they all have one.
TAJ
I am ignoring your remarks - clearly my sewing machine needs the material pointed in the right direction, it isn't an automatic quilt maker (yet!) I will upload photos of edging squares - I have completed 16 out of 52 - I think I might do a big square next. The machine isn't sold as a quilting machine, but it is a dual sewing machine and embroidery machine and you can put cards in it for different designs, not that I have used that function much. So with the auto thing on I press go and it does three holding sitches then starts going forward to sew, when I want to stop I press the reverse button and it does three stiches on the spot, lifts the needle and cuts the thread. Plum
Go girl only another 3,333 pieces to go. Behind every quilter is a big bag of fabric.
TAJ
I have completed one of the big squares - all went well. Here are photos of my 16 edging squares and the big square - the big one is 13" square - you do not get the scale from the pic. The big square: http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2369.jpg The smaller squares: http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2367.jpg ...and closer up: http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii49/TAJchicks/IMG_2368.jpg The smaller ones all have the same triangles, though some of the dusky pink ones have more flowers, the squares in the middle are really very varied, it is just I am working down the pile, so you can see only two materials here, plenty of more in different fabrics still to do. What do you think? Tracy

TAJ
Thanks, but I think getting one square looking good is fine - it is when I try and match up 4 corners that it will get trickier, but little at a time I hope I get there. TAJ
Sadly no more done since then . We spent a day picking and freezing a plastic storage box full of gooseberries, plus red currants and white currants on the allotment and then I have been out in the garden as I bravely put the two lots of chickens in together last night, so they needed extra supervision. Hopefully I will get back to it in the week. Tracy
chickencam
That looks great and os neat too. My mum has made several patchwork quilts over the past 20 odd years, all by hand cutting our pieces using a template. They are lovely but a real labour of love. TAJ
Just to say it is going slow - two busy weekends, but OH and DD are away 4th July weekend so I plan a full two days working on this, with no disturbance! Tracy

TAJ
I did say I would have more time to get on with it this weekend and I have! I have now completed all 56 edging squares plus I am up to 3 out of 25 of the big squares - I shall continue doing more of these today and try and add some photos later. After today there will be no progress for a while - busy week at work and off to India with work in a week's time. Tracy

TAJ
I know you need pictures, but I have now completed 10 of the 25 big squares (2 out of 5 rows) and I have sewn them all together and even did the tricky 8 star points to all match - so I am very impressed with it so far. I know I can only work on it when I have time to concentrate - it is not a job for when you are tired. Will try to do a photo tomorrow.
