I think our Amber star has gone broody - she was flat as a pancake yesterday & earlier. Just going to check on her now & get hubby to see how many eggs are under her later. They will be fertilised by either my Partridge Cochin or my lavender Araucana. More likely the Cochin, so it is very exciting - as we want more chooks. Cockerels aren't a problem, as my sister lives on a farm & I also have chicken friends who can accomodate them & want them - as well as keeping one or 2 ourselves. We are very lucky in that area.

We are wondering about a broody coop though. We do have a small arc, but it is better for a broody bantam - as quite small. We could separate an area in the shed with a panel frame of netting. Or I could source a broody coop & run from that famous auction site. Whatever, we have decided we are going to let her sit, rather than remove the eggs - this is our first proper broody, as all other chicks were hatched using the incubators.

........ 1 Egg!!!!!!!!!!! :shock::roll:

So now we have the dilemma of what to do. Do we let her just sit on the one, put some of our own fertile eggs under her or aquire some eggs for breeds we might want?

Oh help!

We put another 2 eggs under her last night & she totally accepted them. We have been out for lunch today & when we came back she was on her ' fag break' :wink:

Anyway, she has rolled some more eggs into her nest & is now sitting on a total of 7.

Hubby is sorting out a broody coop tomorrow, will will go in the shed, but she won't get mithered by her friends. She will have her own space, be protected, but will still be able to see her friends. The shed is also locked at night.

When & if any eggs hatch & the chicks grow, we will then put in a panel consisting of a frame with wire mesh, so as the chicks can grow up along with their mummy, but the older chickens can't get to them - but still see them. Better for introductions when they are about 16 weeks old. :D

I hope she gets something out of all her careful sitting! :D
