Bleeding prolapse

Recommended Posts

Yes, going to get cat basket now and try and rig an enclosure for her in the shed - I disagree with the vet she is happily scratching in the garden when i go out she runs up to me for food - she is obviously NOT in pain or distress.

Bathed looks like a scab on her prolapsed oviduct. Given her some tuna and tried some preparation H. Her legs feel hot to the touch Im not feeling very optimistic.

See how she is in the morning.

Anyone know achicken sympathetic vet in Cardiff. Kids are very upset.

i think the problem is the scab its making her feel like she needs to go and she is pushing it out. it is only slightly protruding looking at the scab makes me think she maybe laid a softy and the others have pecked at her and the healing scab is there in the passage.

im just very worried about infection.

ive done all i can, dont want to take her to the vet for him to put her down as she is not distressed

You could try honey or vaseline to keep the scab moist and see if it heals (honey is also a little antiseptic) if her legs feel hot there could be infection that is spreading

Sorry to seem doom and gloom but if she prolapsed on Thursday and you are still having problems I think its best you get her to a vet (any vet) for some proper treatment

Do a search on here for antibiotic names and go to a vet armed with that info in case they are not good with chickens so you can tell them what you need if necessary

joegg, so sorry to hear about Bellina. There is a list of recommended vets somewhere on the forum - can't remember where I saw it I'm afraid, and have tried to find it again but without any luck. I do hope that Bellina will be ok. Good luck finding a sympathetic vet.

Have just found the list in FAQ about Poultry Health.

She seems okay in herself this morning - vent still protruding and looking quite messy she appears to be trying to pack at it herself.

There arent any vets in Wales listed, so going to try and contact an exotic vet.

Sorry to say that she absolutely needs a vet's attention now. She will peck at herself repeatedly now.

As Eglutine says, if you can put her somewhere dark she might not be able to see it (it's the red they go for) and might stop pecking at it.

Not pecking herself just trying to clean herself she has spent most of the day pottering and preening. Which is giving us some hope as this is normal chicken behaviour she has gone to bed having been bathed with a full crop in the out house. No longer bleeding but vent does not look much better.

Phoned another vet 100 pounds to have her put down on a Sunday.

So as long as she is not distressed we will carry on caring for her.

Their life spirit is incredibly strong and like all prey birds they will peck and engage in normal behaviours until they are literally at death's door. In this way they hide their distress very well.

Is everything that was protruding from her vent now back inside her?

Bellina went to the flock in the sky today - there didnt seem to be any improvement despite our best effort.

Vet was very nice and admitted he was no expert but might have been willing to give it a stitch if it had been more straightforward.

So sorry to hear the sad news about Bellina. I was involved with my Samosa on Monday going though something a bit similar and she died too. It's heartbreaking, but I think you should get some comfort from the fact she was functioning so well for so long.
