dame egna
I have noticed they seem to differ from 50 watt to 250 watt, and I have no idea which one I will need for my chicks (collecting in two weeks). Is there any difference between ones for use with chicks and reptiles? Also, has anybody any idea where I might get one at a reasonable price online? Thanks for your help as always Sorry, forgot to mention that I will probably have between 2-4 chicks housed in a cardboard box or wooden box to begin with. Don't know if that makes a difference! Lewis
A reptile one will be fine, I'd probably go for one the 50W one, just because you're using a cardboard box and only have 2-4 chicks. Have a look at [ur=http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Exo-terra-heat-glo-50W-infrared-heat-lamp-bulb-BN-glow_W0QQitemZ250410112754QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Pet_Supplies_Reptiles_Spiders_Insects?hash=item250410112754&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A15%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A0%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50]this on ebay[/url]. £4.50 + £1.99 postage. dame egna
Thank you! I have just read your pdf file you sent, brilliant! I probably do have other questions (you'll wish you never said anything now lol) so I'll ask away later when I have a bit more time to think about what I need to know

feemcg
I don't use infra-red as you can get more aggression amongst the chicks and it also destroys some of the vitamins in the feed ( I read this in Practical Poultry mag years ago). I use a ceramic dull-emitter bulb, that gives off heat but no light, so the chicks experience natural daylight and night-time.
TAJ
I used a 150w bulb - but that was in the middle of winter, a lower watts is probably fine at this time of the year. As others have said the ceramic ones do not provide light so they are more natural for the chicks - they then do not eat all day/night. Charlottechicken
My brooder came with a 75 watt spotlight type bulb in it, the one with the silver backing for reflection. I bought a couple of 60 watt ones (couldn't find 75 watt at the time) and switched down to this after a fortnight.
