Injured Buff Orpington Bantam

Recommended Posts

I own two buff orpington bantams and one of them has recently developed a limp.

Purchased them both in December at 10 weeks old from a Poulty Show and they have been sufferring at the hands of my other older hens, 1 Miss Pepperpot, 2 ginger rangers and 2 light sussexs.

I own a Cube and they both have had difficulty in getting up the ladder so have just purchased an eglu which is being delivered 2nd June. Thought I'd pop them in there and it will give me space to buy some more chickens for the Cube.

Any ideas what I should do with my injured bird - she seems happy enough but looks a bit pathetic. I have seperated her from the others in the day so she can rest her leg.

The other buff orpington has turned broody now and won't come off the nest at all. Don't fancy dunking her in cold water!

Looking after chickens is more time consuming than looking after my children! Love it though!!

It's most likely to be a sprain, especially at this time of the year when they leap about a lot.

Bathe her leg and foot and check them for any signs of injury. Keep her warm and in restricted accommodation so that she rests that leg. Give her some extra calcium - Limestone Flour is good and keep an eye on her.

Can I suggest a rest in the broody cage for the hormonal girl? I posted about this in another thread earlier.
