Tiggy
DS has been driving on my insurance whilst learning and is now due to take his test in June, 4 days after the insurance runs out, i now have a new car so he is going to keep my old one. It cost an extra £1,250 to add him to my insurance and if he passes his test it will cost £2,300 I knew boys insurance is more than girls but 4 times as much!!!! DD cost £500 once she passed her test - its the same model of car!!!!!
AnnieP
Ouch! That is more than mine when I had a brand new Lotus! Poor thing! Third party fire and theft only and make him PROMISE to be careful? Limited mileage? There ARE ways to reduce the quote with changing excesses etc.

Seagazer
It is shocking isn't it but I have to say that ES has lost 2 class mates over the last 18 months in car crashes so that, sadly is where the money goes. Go on to one of the websites that gives all the different insurance firms and also try other ones that don't go on Compare and see if you can find one cheaper. We did with ES and he, my 21 DD and myself are all on for about £1300 I think. We are about to sell the little car and give the kids a share of the money to get their own cars and their own insurance. Haven't dared looked to see what ES's will be. Good luck

Good luck I tried to explain this to DS, he still insists men are better drivers not according to the insurance company , I'm sure he will be fine he is a very sensible lad. Sorry to hear about your ES friends Because he will be the main driver of that car if he passes the insurance will not let him continue driving on my policy, we were able to when DD first passed but apparently the rules have changed. I wonder who thought of that one - some insurance company boss I suspect - commission anyone
Saronne
Has he done 'pass plus'? Most insurers will knock off a 1/3 of the cost of insurance as pass plus is considered extra tuition to help them learn about night/motorway/bad weather driving ( I think it costs an additional £100 or so). Also, have you tried Direct Line? When one of my son's passed his, Direct Line was by far the cheapest we'd found. Good luck. Phoebe
we also found the quote was reduced, (Norwich union) when we put ourselves (Mum and dad that is) on ED's policy, as named drivers. Weird. Shows that they live at home still, I suppose.
Seagazer
Ours was with Direct Line as well. The accidents meant that ES always insists everyone wears a seat belt as the two boys were not the drivers but passengers and for some reason weren't wearing seat belts. A harsh lesson for all the school friends to discover but it got the message across. I hasten to add that ES was not the driver or passenger in any of the accidents. Tiggy
I've just done a search and we could get it reduced to £1,400, you are right about putting the parents on it does reduce the cost, looks like Tesco just lost another customer but I'm sure they will cope
Lewis
As Saronne said, try doing Pass Plus. One of my friends can't drive between 11pm and 5am which has reduced the quote. Others insurance went up after passing, some stayed that same, or even reduced after doing Pass Plus. Smaller more eco friendly cars seem to be cheaper aswell. tiggerlady
OD's insurance went UP when she passed Apparently they are deemed more of a 'hazard' cos theyre on their own with no experienced driver with them to help them out of trouble!
freespiritbutterfly
Ive been passed a year now and my insurance is £1600 and thats only because i'm on a joint policy with my mom and her partner otherwise its more like £1800 even though im a girl. I can't belive how expensive it is. I'm not a fan of insurance people as when i first passed my test they bumped my insurance up £2500 when i already paid £1500. They didn't tell me that when i took the policy out that when i passed i would need to pay more on top of what i've already paid.
Mrs Frugal
It's ridiculous, isn't it. My Tom passed his driving test last month and hasn't been able to drive as we can't afford the insurance and I only drive a little Corsa! He's at college so doesn't have any wages coming in either. He's waiting till he turns 19 in September to do his Pass Plus course in the hope that his insurance will come down so we can afford to add him to mine. It's not fair, is it. Tiggy
I just got a quote on line from Quinn Direct (never heard of them before) of £595 same car same driver how on earth can there be so much difference between companies? you are right about adding experianced drivers as a named driver it does brig down the cost, we cant leave him on my policy because he will be the main driver once he passes his test, but it cost me £1200 to add him to mine whilst he was learning, I wish I had known about this company before

Not all insurers increase the premium when he passes. DD is with Churchill and they don't increase it.

Seagazer
Ours was with Quinn when my Tom was learning and it was about £1240, when he passed it went up to something like £2,400. I changed to Direct Line about 4 days later! Ridiculous
