Jennyhenny
I'm probably being very over protective but just got back from work and took some treats around to the girls, two dived in straight away but Popcorn didn't and she's standing their and keeps lifting her neck up and it looks like she trying to adjust herself, if you know what I mean, like when we have a stiff neck and you move your head from side to side shes doing that. Hopefully somebody out there understands what Im on about Jennyhenny
Egluntyne
She might have something stuck in her crop. I'd examine her and see if it feels normal.
Jennyhenny
I'm quite new to this, ive had a feel, feels like a hard mass, what is it supposed to feel like ? Jennyhenny
Egluntyne
Like a bag of gravel really. Firm, but not hard. I'd make sure that she is drinking plenty, and give the crop a gentle massage. If it is still full first thing then it might be impacted. Article **here** that you might find useful.

chelsea
My hen was making very odd movements after gorging on cherry blossom last week, her crop was very full. I lifted her up, massaged and tipped her slightly upside down (had read this somewhere previously) and she stopped doing the movement. Was completely fine the next morning. Jennyhenny
I couldn't wait til morning, thought I would have a go at something now as thought if it wasnt impacted crop it wouldnt really hurt so i've syringed down some warm olive oil and gently massaged the crop, did a quick upside down to see if anything came up, but nothing. I will wait now til tomorrow with fingers crossed Jennyhenny
Budgies
Is she still doing the weird stiff neck thing?
Jennyhenny
Budgies, Yes she is, then she will have the occasionally peck and then just stands there with her head down - looks very fed up with herself Jennyhenny
Jennyhenny
She has just taken herself off to bed, earlier than normal and on her own The crop still feels hard, I had a feel of Hollys crop to compare and hers feels like what I can only think of - remember beany babies, it feels like them soft and grainy, poor Popcorns feels like a hard ball in comparison. I hope alls better tomorrow Jennyhenny
Jennyhenny
Just in case things don't go well over night. How does the maggot thing work My dad is a fisherman, will any maggot do How many should they have and what do they actually do Jennyhenny
Egluntyne
The maggots eat their way through blockages....if they are plugs of tangled vegetation. You need the plain undyed ones.
Jennyhenny
Thanks Egluntine, how many should I give her, what if the others fancy them What actually happen to the maggots when they have eaten the vegetation. Jennyhenny
Egluntyne
Thanks Egluntine, how many should I give her, what if the others fancy them What actually happen to the maggots when they have eaten the vegetation. Jennyhenny I'd give them a dozen or so 3 or 4 times a day.....or more.......for several days. They are eventually digested by the hen......a good source of protein. If the others fancy them.....let them have them as a treat. I'd take her away from the others for a few minutes so that she eats hers and doesn't have them nicked by the others who will seize them if they have the chance. Jennyhenny
Quick update this morning. Opened up the egg port and lifted Popcorn from there to check her over. The bulge is definitely still there, I have syringed olive oil and massaged and am going to pick up the dreaded maggots later They better enjoy the treat as they won't be getting them too often I hope they eat them quick the thought of them in the run makes me shudder Jennyhenny
Jennyhenny
Its now 1.30, Popcorn is standing with her head down really fed up. I bought some maggots and tried to feed some but she's only eaten about 5/6 and will try later and see if she will eat a few more Jennyhenny
Budgies
Can you tell from the texture of what's in her crop what it's likely to be? When Chutney stopped being able to eat I could feel grain in her crop. If it's vegetation the maggots will help, but if it'd grainy I don't think this would work. Is there a vet near you perhaps? Jennyhenny
I have a feeling straw is the culprit. Ive just grabbed hold of her again and got 3 more maggots down her and I massaged it, the mass feels like I may have squashed it down some, it doesn't feel a ball now. I have to go out now so will feel later to see if its in a ball again. The other two girls were about wetting themselves when they saw her with the maggots it was so funny I gave them the few that were left I had taken out the container.
