Poached Egg
We spent the day humping slabs (only from shop to garden - 22 slabs took 3 journeys and we need about 80 slabs (rest ate being delivered on Thursday along with 2 tonnes of sand!!!!). Back breaking isn't it! It will all be worth it in the end. Anyway, somewhat delayed but here are some piccies Hmm, nice pile of sand Sans roof The ubiquitous 'Tony' shot (thanks Tony) Feed/FR hatch Cube pop hole with FR/under cube hatch and ladder in use Finished - other than the slab surround, side tarps, Kroken for the glug & grubs, more play stuff, maybe get some new feed bins a la Judy, integrate the girls, move the play frame, treat the shed, harvest & weave the willow, get the lawn to recover... It is ALL fab!

DonnaS
I think I'm confusing myself with threads here! Am double posting. Anyway - first things first - well done Poached Egg - lovely base and lovely run. I'm envious! Your chooks will be very happy. Glad the build went well and congrats and all that! Here's where we are at at the moment (fingers crossed - first time with ImageShack): The area that the run will be located - currently a bed with raspberry canes and rhubarb - marked out by some of Tony's wood. Veg beds mostly built - but need to surround with paving before we can dig out soil from WIR bed and fill veg beds with it. So this is the first job. Some paving in the background (after our 3 car journeys). Most of the rest should be delivered. Am v. worried about laying nigh on 80 slabs - but know it will be worth it in the end! Cheers. PS ImageShack worked - very cool.

DonnaS
The veg beds maybe Judy (they were a doddle to build - though I had a sore elbow from all the screwing I did (cue comments...). But the chicken run is nowhere yet (oh, I did dig out and move the redcurrant bush and rhubard - so that's something). Hope the weather will be nice this weekend! Cheers. Ain't Nobody Here
Can someone please tell me how I do a quote box without the quote text being there ??? If you click "quote" it normally just comes up with which shows as "whoever wrote". I don't know where that extra "quote" came from in yours . DonnaS
Redwing. I have one and it was put to good use at the weekend on the raised beds (I think about 90+ screws). But it only got the screws most of the way in - not all the way in - and I was in charge of the regular screw-driver to finish off. My arm still aches (but is getting better and will be quite fine for the next session this weekend). Very nice WIR. Can't wait for mine - but Easter chooks are looking a bit doubtful now (was hoping to get from BHWT at the end of this month - not sure when next local delivery of batt chooks is after that). Cheers. fantasticjudyann
Hi Emchook-welcome back At last I've fixed my tarp problems In the end I lopped off the bottom of each tarp and fixed on some holdon clips on the cut edge. It's really easy to cut and the clips seem to hold very well. Then I cable tied the clips to the screw in hooks which I had put in the frame Trouble was the wind (I've got a very windy site here ) blew the tarp off the hooks and it was flapping around so I replaced them with screw in eyes which are a lot stronger So I'm hoping that its's done the trick The chooks are loving the new run. They dustbath in the Hemcore and in the new dustbath I've given them. I think they are really happy so I don't feel guilty any more about keeping them in the Eglu run. The two tarps keep off the prevailing wind and the rain so I'm really liking the Hemcore Hope you are successful with yours. Keep us posted
Lewis
Can you just click the quote button? Cazx
Hello all Ive now had my girls for 2 1/2 weeks and am loving them so much Ive decided to convert our old cat house run into a walk in run for them. All the runs I have seen have been very inspirational A couple of questions I want to ask you all, which I know will put my mind at ease... 1) what do you use on the floor? Bark? Chippings? 2) How do you clean it out? 3) How do you find a flat corrugated roof? Is it easy to keep clean? Hubby and me are still working oout how to convert the cat run. Just need some pointers Maybe the girls might start to lay then. Thank you all in advance.
fantasticjudyann
Hi Casx I first had my Eglu and run on woodchip which worked pretty well. Woodchip doesn't mind getting wet but as I had mine on earth it did get a bit muddy .. If you put down a thick layer that shouldn't happen. Bark is less good. I used to rake it out once a month and put fresh down. Now, I've got a WIR on earth and I use Hemcore which is brilliant but it has to be kept dry so you'll need that roof. I've also got clear glass tarpaulins on 2 sides to keep out the rain coming in from the side. I haven't cleaned it out yet but I think it will probably last 2 or 3 months with poo picking in between .( It all depends how long the chooks are going to be in the run.) All you have to do is brush or rake it out and put it on the compost heap then put fresh down. If you look back over this thread and on Part 1 you'll find lots of different advice from people who are a lot more experienced than me. Can't tell you much about roofs though. Best of luck-let us know how you get on
