Medical question about veins - help!

Recommended Posts

I had my first ever general anaesthetic about 10 days ago, day surgery, and have just noticed something strange on my hand.

My little needle scab (no, big needle scab, big, big) is about to drop off, but there is no vein underneath. There is a vein to the finger side of the scab, but none to the wrist side for about 3 cm. However, a large greeny vein has appeared on my wrist right in line with the non existant vein, it looks like a varicose vein.

I am a bit worried as this has freaked me out a bit (really hate medical things :anxious: ), has my vein collapsed? I have to go back in a few weeks time for more day surgery, will I lose another vein, or should I tell them to use the other hand for the anaesthetic this time? I am neither right nor left handed and am not ambidextrous.

Help!

Note to anyone going in for day surgery, do not go straight back to work the following working day as I did, you will need recovery time :roll:

how are you holding your wrist? towards you or away from you? your veins do appear to disappear if your wrist is bent away from you or is it still the same with your wrist bent toward you?

I had mine on a tuesday, got home wednesday and went back to work thursday and wish I had taken the week off - should have asked the doctor for a line as I was knackered at the end of the day.

Not sure re the veins as mine were on top of my hand along a line from my wedding ring finger and I had a blown vein and a mess afterwards - takes about 2 weeks to go away when they bruise and blow the veins.

I was just glad I'd woken up after mine, I never checked my veins so no idea if the same happened to me I'm afraid.

the phrase "Blown veins" makes me go all goose pimply :?

Yes, the veins on top of my hand! I am holding my hand palm down with fingers away from me. The anaesthetic went in about half way between my wrist and fingers. The vein from my fingers to the point of entry (so to speak) is still there, but the vein from that point to my wrist is gone for around 3cm, then this greeny lump starts to appear. I should also point out I am really pale skinned and can see all my veins etc :vom:

Susan, I had mine on Friday, and went back to work on Monday, but had to leave early for two days due to extreme tiredness  I also left the hospital on my own and went home on public transport  Actually, I so wanted to get out of there I would have walked home, I had gyno surgery too, no pain relief either.

I don't blame you for not wanting to stay in hospital, I had an awful experience when I had my op and you know what happened with my dad :(

You should take some time off work though, not easy to do in some circumstances though I know.

Hope you feel better soon xxx

I don't do sickness Poet (not that I am never ill), well I try not to but really should have had a week off work. I haven't had a day off in three years, and then it was gyno trouble  I have to go back for them to remove a polyp, but I have to consent to a hysterectomy as this may be needed as the procedure to remove the polyp can sometimes perforate the uterus.

After I had my pre op I came home and was hammering six foot fence posts into the ground (whilst standing on a saw horse) then wondered why my arm bruised up badly where they had taken a blood sample

you just can't tell some folk (and I'm one of them :D )

Well you had the same as me and I had to consent to an emergency hysterectomy in case of bleeding and had a large polyp removed - your veins are blown which means they will have bled a little causing bruising and will go down in about 10 days- you will live I promise and its not a varicose vein - I had a young lad anaesthetist putting in the catheter in the prep room before I had the anaesthetic and he made a mess of it so the anaesthetist rammed in in saying it would be needed as salvage and he put in another one no bother and pain free! He joked that I would remember him for 2 weeks!!!. I also had no pain relief but I did not need any and was so relieved to have no hysterectomy at all.

Can assure you your vein will still be under your scab it has probably run away! Thats what veins do, fright and flight literally...thats why once they start trying too many times to get a fresh attempt, it is harder for them each time to get a vein. Its your bodies natural defence mechanism.

Your green area is bruising but not as when you fall over its just a bit of bleeding under the skin especially as you say you are very pale skinned. Some people can look like they have done a few rounds with mike tyson.

It will fade as it heals which is exactly what your scab has done. Your body has done its right job to provide a scab(own in built protective cover)

Good luck with future visits, anaesthetics are much better than they use to be

Veins do collapse after trauma. I remember in my old house job days, trying to find good and healthy veins to put lines in.

It's just your body's natural defence mechanism like Indie says. The green is just old blood, like a bruise.

It will 'bounce' back in a couple of weeks or so! :D
