The Dogmother
No, I am not getting an account! You all know what I think of it If I don't have an account, how can people add me as a friend? I am totally puzzled as I have had requests from some lovely friends to become their facebook pals; I have politely declined, but am stumped as to how they found me as I don't have facebook. clootie
It's your email address Claret. Facebook asks you if you want to contact all the email addresses on your comp. All very sneaky really.
The Dogmother
Sounds like it clootie, but half these people don't have my email address - they're acquaintances only. I don't want them to think I'm rude, but having picked up a stalker in the very early days of facebook, when it wasn't very secure, I deleted the account. Cinnamon
I think I may have added you, & if I remember your name came up as someone I might know. Kates did too, & I don't think she has an account either, does she?

I can understand that Sarah, because you have my email address What I can't fathom is how people who don't have my email can add me - not a complaint at all, just trying to fathom the whole 'big brotherness' of it. Intriguing.......

Lewis
It does it by mutual friends and networks. So if I was friend with Cinnamon and Poet they were both friends with you, they'd suggest you as a friend to people who were friends with both of those two people. Networks are set up for work places, Uni's and schools and it suggests those people as friends too. People you may know comes up on the right hand side od facebook, and I think you popped up today Clare
The Dogmother
Ahhh, I see now; fascinating. Thank you Lewis I don't want them to think I am rude by not joining them. Worrying about the connections it can make though

Lewis
How can it do that if she doesn't have an account though? I'm not sure. I keep getting notification emails from "Tagged" . I haven't set up an account with them, but I got fed up with all the emails so clicked on the link to one of them. I already have an account with them with some friends on it, and I have a profile picture on there! It isn't me, but its a picture I used to use on one of the 'social networking' websites! They must have somehow linked it to that and got the old picture

jlo
Clare - I am not sure why but whenever I go onto my yahoo mail account, it tells me whether you are online and whether you are available to chat. I really can't remember when that popped up but I don't even think that I have your private e-mail address!! Spooky

redfrock
I've been meaning to email you hon as Facebook has been suggesting I add you as a friend and I know you won't use it, so I've been wondering what on earth has been going on. This is all very concerning
The Dogmother
I've had lots of requests from people on this forum - some who I hardly know, so I wonder whether facebook can 'see' the hidden emails in forum members' profiles Worrying isn't it? I will try to remember to ask my techie friend next time I see him.
missuscluck
Clare, I have just had a look at my Facebook 'people you may know' bit and you are on mine too. Its a bit odd. I would have thought if you had cancelled your account that you would no longer be listed. Have you mailed them to get them to remove you?
The Dogmother
I thought I was removed and have no way of contacting them as I don't have an account, is there a customer service email address that you can see on your account?
The Dogmother
Right, thanks to a link from Cinnamon, I have tackled the problem.... I visited the Facebook site and tried the reset/forgotten password option. It sent me a link to reset my password - which I shouldn't have as the account was completely deleted - I even have the email from them confirming that. I have reset the pasword, logged on and deleted the account yet again. Interestingly, most of the people who came up on a list for me to allow as friends were from the Omlet forum, and people who I don't know apart from via the forum. Methinks the forum's emails that are 'hidden' on profiles can be harvested, which is slightly worrying.

missuscluck
Oooh dear. I have just read through a very long thread started by someone who asked the question 'how do I contact Facebook directly and privately' It looks like it is pretty much computer generated and un moderated. You can try but you are unlikley to get any response. Try this http://www.facebook.com/help/contact_generic.php?bug Someone posted it as a link. Ask Krysia as I think she has mailed them. A bit worrying really
