henpen
We let our chooks out this afternoon for the first time today. They had a great time, chomping their way through the lawn and noseying their way around the garden. The only problem... I couldn't relax whilst watching them pooing around the garden. The thought of the kids walking poo into the house really bothered me! Does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of poo off the lawn? I went round with a trowel, but it was difficult to pick up the sloppy, chicken korma ones!!?!!
moochoo
I just hose mine in. The lawn seems to benefit from the extra fertiliser.
Egluntyne
Leave it to dry if you can and then rake it away with one of those springy leaf rakes.
Happy chickens!
I have one of those dustpans with a long handle, then a long handled s"Ooops, word censored!"er which I use to gather the droppings. As Egluntine says, it's easier if you leave them to dry. My children have banned me from letting the chickens from the main garden now the nice weather is here - it's too easy to miss the odd one... PurpleTree
My 2 boys have got really good at spotting the poo and avoiding it, they also know that they have to take their shoes off in the kitchen as soon as they come in - just in case! They've been spending a lot of time out in the garden this week, with the chickens free ranging all afternoon. I just go around with a trowel and a plant pot picking up poo a couple of times throughout the afternoon. We haven't had a problem yet. Yolky
There are a few things you can do... hose in the sloppy ones get the kids garden crocs that come off at the door get some omlet netting and give the chooks a defined area
jonnysthedude
Hi, i agree with yolky. It is so much easier for the chickens to have their own bit of garden, ive bought the omlet netting, i found no problem with cutting it, in fact its so much easier to handle in smaller bits. The hassle of finding poo on my shoes and bringing the odd sample back in with you , made me invest, also the netting can protect any little areas of garden you still want to look good. good luck, Jonny. chickencam
We have a plastic grass rake and a big dustpan that we got from Homebase and that clears them up a treat. We are a shoes off house so I keep a box by the patio doors for crocs and we have a huge built in doormat by the front door.
BocBoc
Outdoor shoes are the future! That's what we do too - I got a bit fed up of random squashed poops on the stairs, in the bathroom, in the bedroom....
jomaxsmith
Hubby and I decided that free range chickens, small boys, flowers and vegetable plants don't easily mix so we built the hens an enclosed area. I definitely don't miss the poo outside the patio door Jo
Ain't Nobody Here
Our lawn & patio is poo-free thanks to Omlet netting - it's brilliant .
roo4006
Hubby and I decided that free range chickens, small boys, flowers and vegetable plants don't easily mix so we built the hens an enclosed area. I definitely don't miss the poo outside the patio door Jo Same here, got fed up with having no grass and poo everywhere so built an enclosed area for our girls too , its a lot nicer to walk round the garden without having to watch where you are treading also all the grass has grown back and the garden looks like a garden again
Aggienator
Giving the girls some Bokashi Bran helps to firm up the poo and make it easier to collect in a bucket with a deft flick of the pooper scooper
fluffyknickers
I got totally fed up with the poo and my kids so got some Omlet netting and made them their own area (the chickens not the kids) and they are contained to that and never let out. emmamakeup
Once my chickens have finished free ranging (I do supervised free ranging) I get my plastic garden rake and rake the poo up. Since I've been using bokashi bran I've noticed the poo is a little easier to get up and it doesn't smell that much now. The ones that are a bit runny then I get the garden hose on those and it just sinks into the lawn. When the weather's a bit poor I put Olivia her wellies on and we always take them off before we go inside the house. I think when the autumn/winter settles in I might invest in some of that netting to define the chickens' area.
Dolly
Slip on plastic 'outdoors only' shoes work for us (by Town & Country I think) along with hosing the korma poos away and OH mowing over the rest with the lawnmower - glad I don't have to empty it! Oh Carolina
Giving the girls some Bokashi Bran helps to firm up the poo and make it easier to collect in a bucket with a deft flick of the pooper scooper I have found that he Bokashi Bran does make a difference, and you only have to wait one day for the results to take effect...
