*mummy_hen*
I'm sorry to post yet another depressing topic but i know you will all understand. After yesterday's terrible outcome, i wake up this morning, let my two remaining girls out and Henrietta was very unwell We took her to the vets this morning and she also has fluid in her abdomen. They are operating at 3.30 this afternoon, she may have the oviduct problem which they originally thought Edwina had, in which case they can try and remove this and if a success she should live on happily. However, there is a chance she could have the tumours that the other two girls had - they won't know until they operate I cannot believe this is happening - it is all so unfair!! I now have Florence at home with me - she is very nervous without the other girls around and follows me everywhere. I pray Henrietta makes it through for all our sakes. The vet has also told me that they fear the cancer is a form caused by a virus that they all carry and would have had since being in the hen house - if this is the case i cannot introduce more girls as they would then also catch it!! I am so worried that Florence is going to be the only girl left - if so what am i going to do??!! She is fine when i am around, but OH and me work full time and the girls were always fine in the day doing their own thing but on her own she won't like it one bit!! I still cannot believe this is all happening, last weekend was so perfect with the lovely weather and the girls enjoying the sunshine, i can't believe just 5 days later how much everything has changed. TAJ
Oh dear - what a shock , I guess you need to wait and see the results from the vets tests before you decide what to do now. At least you can say they had over a year in a wonderful pampered environment after their earlier life. My thoughts are with you and I know how much they meant to you - to lose so many so quickly is such a shock. Tracy

Budgies
Oh Mummy_hen what a difficult time you're having right now. My heart goes out to you. It does sound as though something is sweeping through your girls right now - maybe something has triggered it off if they had a virus when young. Wishing Henrietta all good things and hoping that she will soon be back with Florence. If by chance Henrietta does have the same thing, I think you will need to talk to your vet about the risk to new hens and what can be done going forward. You poor thing, what a horrible week you're having. Thinking of you

Griffin
Is it Leukosis? My Welsummer cockerel Wally developed what we think was that at 12 weeks. His tumours were in his spinal column & nervous system gradually paralysing him over the course of a week before I let him go. Fortunately all the other chicks that grew up with him are fine, it just seems that he was a one off. My vet said most chickens will come into contact with the virus at some point in their lives (unless they're kept in a bio-secure environment) and most will not succumb to it, those that do probably were ill or had underlying issues elsewhere already. I guess if yours were all ex-bats their immune system wasn't 100% because of their hard life. If I were you I would throughly disinfect everywhere and adopt some more girls. My Wallys death is proof that Leukosis doesn't kill them all. Wally and your girls were just unlucky. I'm so sorry.

Budgies
What an awful time you're having hon. If it is leukosis, I'm trying to understand how they would have had it when young yet all be having problems so close together now? I feel so sorry for you, wish I had some better advice to offer, but just a hug. ((((())))))
*mummy_hen*
Apparantly the 'raction' can take 1 to 3 years to manifest itself and he believe the reason it was so close together is the point of lay they all reached at the same time. Budgies
I'm just so sorry for you hon, what an awful thing to happen to your girls. I suppose that you have to focus on the lovely life they've had with you, the wonderful chickeny things they've been able to do since you've had them, which they would never have known otherwise. How's Florence today?
Plum
Sorry to hear what a rotten time you are having. Hope the other girl is not affected.
*mummy_hen*
Thank you all. We yesterday managed to get 2 lovely silver bantam ducks as company for florence. She is a bit unsure of them at the moment but they seem to love her and at least she isn't alone. The run is currently separated in 2 and they both have their own living quarters but we hope eventually they may be all together. Florence is still very dependant on me and will go mad if she can see me outside the run. I will spend as much time with them all as i can but at least when she is in her run when i am at work she will have company. PS. The ducks are complete cuties and very tiny!! Plum
Bantom ducks I didn't know there were such a thing. Can we see pics of them with Florence? Poor little Florence glad she's not quite so lonely now. Hugs for you

*mummy_hen*
Hi lum, i hadn't heard of them either, all the way to collect them i kept saying to husband 'he did say ducks didn't he?' Haven't got any photos of the 3 of them at the moment as florence is being a bit of a bully but she towers above them. Will post once they are all living in harmony
Budgies
I'm sure you'd rather have Florence feisty than pining!! They'll settle down, but it may take a while. At least she's occupied in the meantime eh?
*mummy_hen*
Yes it is early days but they are all doing ok. She certainly isn't lonely like she was when it all happened. She is very clingy wuth me now though, i can't let her see me unless i am letting her out as she goes stir crazy. She is happy enough though....she doesn't have time to be lonely, too busy being bossy. Luckily the ducks don't seem to mind..they love her!!
