tidygirlsuk hatch day *Update 3 chicks

Recommended Posts

Thanks andrew. How long does it take to be corrected ? It only seems to be one leg. It looks a lot better already. Do you think the hen will except it back, when it is better beacuse its as shame to leave it on its own.
It might take a few days and a couple of re-straps. Splat was back in his feet and stable in just a few hours. There's some good information I was given by another forum member at the time on this link. I don't know if the chick will be accepted back, splat was hatched in an incubator, so no real Mummy Hen. Re-introducing with his legs strapped up should be fine. If you get the little chap back quickly, I'd guess you should be OK.

 thank you for the link. I had already saved this link on my computer b4 my chicks hatched. It was like i knew. We are on the second tape already. We did put the chick back with the broody but it was getting knocked over by the hen, she's getting more active now.. It seems better in the brooder. I'm not sure what to do for the best.

I think you'd be best to keep trying put it in with the broody with taped up legs, as you say its better to be with her and not alone, and if its getting stronger it should be ok.

Maybe try and put it under when it starts to get dark so they all fall asleep and aren't running around?

I had been putting little pingu back with mom at night but in the mornings I was finding that the tape was sticking Liv (my broody). Now Pingu is in the brooder it is doing much better. He/she can now stand with or with out the tape but without it, one leg just wasn't straight as the other. So we are keeping it on for now. He/she is now no longer on his/her own in the brooder he/she now has 2 new friends that we collected today.

This is pingu now

He/she looks great! Probably best to take over the chick-raising duties yourself now, s/he will benefit in the long run if you can apply a little TLC for the next few weeks. I'd keep th tape on his/her legs until they are working 'right' - won't do any harm for him/her to be like that for a while.

Our chick has made a full recovery and is running around with the other 2 that got on the weekend.

It was a lot of work. I had been reading up on chick leg conditions, and there was instruction on how to make a chair for the chick to get its legs better. It was a bit tricky to make so i held to chick in my hand the same as the chair would have done for five minutes at a time. That same day he/she was trying to walk on its own. Then he/she could walk the next day. So my little plymouth rock chick has no tape now and you would have never have know that there had been any thing wrong with it  Thank you for your help. :D

what cute chicks, Ive just read all of the previous postings and you've definatley been put through the mill!! Well done with all your efforts. I think your picture of pingu in tape is really useful as it clearly shows how to do it! I have had seven recent arrivals, fortunatley without any problems. for pictures see my posting on the forum. my only problem is identification as the markings on the eggs rubbed off!!! I had six chaucer bantams, which no-one has ever heard of and six frizzles. four were booted out by mum(infertile when checked!) and one didn't hatch. I know i definatley have two frizzles as they are beginnning to fizz! waiting to see what the others are. i also have no idea about sexing them?? any hints???

Hey hey, what a result . I'm sure you will, but just keep a special eye out for a few days more, just in case there's a hic-up along the way.

Sad news, My plymouth rock, pingu's leg slipped back and is looking worse than before. We taped it up but it can't sit or stand with the tape on. We have removed the tape now. The joint looks twisted. I have decided to have him/her to sleep tomorrow.
I'm really sorry to hear that. Unfortunately it's an all too common set-back that many experience. Our little spraddle chick, 'splat', suffered the same fate having looked like s/he made a recovery after a couple of days taped up. Sometimes it just not meant to be, and natures way of ensuring only the best stock gets through to adulthood.

:(
