Willow
Thought I'd start the debate. Much as I would love the answer to be yes I'm not convinced. - Quails lay anywhere in the run so you need to be able to reach all parts to retrieve eggs - Some quails jump up when disturbed and hit their head (and then becuase they have hurt their head they continue to jump making the situation worse) so ideally you need to pad the top of the run with bubble wrap - Quail don't retreat to a house at night time they roost anywhere so a run with a sheltered corner works well for when weather is cold. - I would have thought the roosting bars are too large and too far apart for quail if the package includes the regular bars. What do other quail keepers think ?
LaPoule
I am planning on keeping the quail in 2 cube run extensions (possibly three) with an eglu inside. The whole thing will be housed in the yet-to-be WIR. The fact that it is inside the WIR should act as a quail "airlock", and being inside cube extensions should add enough extra height (will still pad with bubblewrap if necessary) and will also make it easier for me to get inside to egg collect etc. I will probably put some edging around the bottom of the run, to prevent any potential chicken peckings. Any thoughts?
Janty
I bought a rablu to keep the quail in but I now keep them in a wooden run inside the WIR. We are still considering the rablu but I like the idea of the cube runs with the rablu inside. The quail adaptation appears to turn the eglu base into a rablu style base. Krysia
yes but at a fraction of the price. We have 2 eglus not always in use I have the chicks in 1 and we have just set up the other ine with a rablu base to get some guinea pigs...hopefully this afternoon
Willow
Agreed when I've wodnered about using an egli in the past I assumed it would need a rablu base. I'm still stuck on whether the quail would actually use the eglu/rablu for anything more than a space to explore and how you collect eggs laid in the middle of the run without them escaping
Janty
My quail all lay their eggs in the wicker basket within their run so I reckon it's possible to train them.
Lesley
Ours lay all over the place - and can fly as high as the 6' roof of their aviary. I had to put the Eglus in to WIRs so an Eglu for quail wouldn't be for me.
Willow
My quail all lay their eggs in the wicker basket within their run so I reckon it's possible to train them. How did you manage that ? I'd love to have them all lay in same place !
Janty
I put the wicker basket in the run and two of them started laying in it. I left an egg in there for a week and the others followed suit. they do lay elsewhere occasionally but the basket is their favourite. It is a small basket though....probably why they like it. Janty
I have been keeping track this week...there is regularly one egg laid out of the basket but each day there are three or four little eggs in the back of the basket each evening. I will post a picture tonight if I remember.
