Broody Bluebelle? - just only started laying?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

My Bluebelle started laying 3 days ago ( she's 20 weeks old ). We had 2 perfect eggs then a softie yesterday.

The problem is she's started making a lot of noise when i go near the nest box  and when i cleaned it out yesterday she stood there the whole time watching me. Also yesterday evening she went in the nestbox for a good half hour and came out making more noise for bout half hour.

Coould she be going broody already????? Any tips on how to stop the noise?

Thanks for your help in advance :?

I doubt she is broody this early on....I might be wrong.

I would think that the noise and the watching is probably cos she is wondering what on earth is happening to her.....i don`t think I would want an audience whilst popping out an egg

Did she lay an egg when she went into the nest box last night? If she did then she was doing her egg announcment song.

Re reducing the noise - I find that if my lot can see the others when they come out of the nestbox after laying they don`t egg announce for so long. So i try to leave them in the WIR until they have all laid. They still sing about laying the egg but they stop much sooner

My Bluebell is very vocal when waiting to lay or having just laid, always has been, and they ALL gather round and moan at me when I do a big clean in the run or Eglu. Hilda positively jumps up and down on the spot next to me while I'm scrubbing if she wants to lay (even though she dosn't always do it in the 'lu!!)

My bluebelle is a big girls blouse..she is the most nosey entertaining matronly bird in the run and is always the last in at night as she hangs around until the last minute in case she misses anything....

I got softies for about 3 weeks on and off to begin with but this then stopped of its own accord

good luck indie

It does sound like typical new laying behaviour - like a first time Mum who has to have the nursery just right and lots of attention. Give her a few weeks and she will just want to pop it out and get back to work!

Although less likely to go broody, hybrids do still do it occasionally. She will turn into a feather pancake and glue herself to the nestbox floor, growling and raising her hackles at anyone who disturbs her. :D
