Any ideas? Seeing a bright light.

Recommended Posts

Need to pick your brains. Last night I noticed a small yellow bright light on the right side of my vision. It was when I was locking the chooks up and thought it was a firefly but it didn't go.

I've had migraine shimmery lights for years in Spring and a blue light when I look down to the right on occasions. The internet told me the blue light was my guardian angel and when I told the optician she laughed but couldn't say what it was.

So any ideas what my firefly is. I can see it now :?

I get the flashing lights but no pain. The optician told me it was a visual migraine. I have noticed recently that it seems to come on if I have been lifting, twisting or in someway putting a bit of a strain on my stomach. Starts as a small splodge in the centre of my vision (eg, if I am looking at someone I can't see their face), then it gradually opens out into a circle and gets bigger and bigger until it disappears round the back of my eyes.

Don't know about the blue or yellow lights but if you think it might be a guardian angel you could ask them to find another way of letting you know of their presence.

Yes should find it comforting  You describe the migraine one well. I saw a painting of it -the shimmering diamonds in a crescent which was when I realised what it was.

The light that flashes down the side of my vision is different but probably is migraine I have been feeling stressed lately. :D Thanks

I get this too when I am stressed. I was told it was 'the aura of migraine'. Mine starts exactly the way Rhona described and then it gradually gets bigger and bigger until I have a real light show going on  It lasts between 10 and 20 minutes and then starts to disappear round the back of my vision. I have been told it has no cure and is

completely harmless. I don't get the migraine pain either but I do feel like a wrung out

dishcloth afterwards.

Be thankful you don't get the pain...do you get any of the other nasty side effects like numbness, difficulty forming coherent words/sentences? Oh they are a joy!

Once I got one set off if when I was ironing a gingham shirt in the sun......once after eating peanut butter............usually after ODing on chocolate.........often when highly stressed (combined with chocolate!).........Tuesday I had once start off after I had bathed Buffie to remove all the egg goo from her belly before she went out on her own broody nest box, no idea what that was all about, but seemed to clear quite quickly so I mustn't complain........wrung out dishcloth is a very good description of the after-feelings, along with the "jubilee clip" effect whenever my head changes direction/orientation..........ho hum :anxious: !!

I find that feverfew tincture taken in water at the outset of an attack has a speeding up effect on the nasty side effects, tastes like Jeyes fluid but works for me and camomile tea once you can take something more than water in, tastes much nicer than feverfew!!! I also took skullcap tablets along with the feverfew as a preventative (which is the way you are supposed to take it  ) after a particularly nasty bout of attacks for which all the doc would suggest was beta blockers

Hope your guardian angel stops flashing at you & settles on another form of communication!

Hi Plum,

It might just be worth having it checked out by an optician/GP (I am neither by the way) - I had something similar a few years back, mentioned it to my optician purely by chance, who referred me to the local eye hospital to have it checked out fully. Fortunately it wasn't anything serious - just the vitreous jelly in the eye becoming detached from the retina (due to natural aging, albeit a bit premature in my case, probably because I'm very short sighted). However, the hospital staff did tell me to come back and have the other eye checked if I ever got similar symptoms, because flashes were occasionally indicative of a retinal tear, which would need treating. The investigations were quick and only minimally uncomfortable - the only problem is you can't drive for a couple of hours afterwards because they have to dilate the pupil.

best wishes

:( You poor people at least I don't get headaches and the other horrible effects. Well I get plenty of headaches due to sinus problems but that's nothing compared with migraines.

If my new flashes get worse or persists I'll do something, retinal tear sounds scary.

I have Stickler Syndrome(a very mild case) and i have to be aware of flashing lights, floaters and blurry vision as it could be my retina detaching. My retina is most likely to deatch when i'm around the age of 40 as it runs in the family. My 11 year old sister has already has lazer surgery because she had a large hole in her retina.

I have had it drummed into me from a young age that if i have any problems with my eyes then to get checked out as soon as possible. I never wanted to go but now i have a very good looking eye doctor with a lovely accent so its all good :D

Anyway i would get it checked out if it keeps happening, even if they say its nothing at least you know.

My first thought was 'Plum's being abducted by aliens'

I have now idea what they are but sometimes, normalyy after rubbing my eyes or drying my face I get loads of the tiny little things, just like fireflies :) no pain though.

Hope everything's alright :)

Ooer Aliens

Take care Emma sounds like you are living on a knife edge. Could you get it adhered before it has a chance to tear or detach.

My friend hit her head on a suitcase in Crete and had a detached retina. She wanted to fly back so had it injected with silicone then had 4 ops when she got back including a cataract removed because they nicked the lens. She's ok now but they are going to operate on her good eye to prevent it happening to that one which makes me wonder if something can be done to protect your eyes. :?

Not had my flasher this afternoon so fingers crossed it's gone. If so I know it may be a migraine aura, if it comes back I'll see the dock to check. I do have threads and clouds but they are transparent and had them before I saw the optitian last time. She said I was getting cataracts. That makes me feel really old. I think I am just neurotic. :D
