Fossil hunting in Dorset/Wiltshire/Hampshire

Recommended Posts

We had a lovely couple of hours at Charmouth, and after a while of looking down at lots of stones and not the scenery we found our first fossils! I found one in a big rcok and the YD was sitting on a large flat rock when she noticed an ammonite :D She was very, very happy. We have brought some rocks home for them to hammer open and see what treasures are in them, if any. I was amazed at the people who were going onto the cliffs  The fools. It was a hell of a drive (almost 2 hours each way on a horendous road. I'm sure all the tractors, trucks and slow coaches were lying in wait for us to drive there and back :x ) but worth it.

Hi

I've just come back from 8 days just up the coast from Charmouth, a beautiful little fishing village called Beer, well worth a visit if anyone is down that way. I'm already hoping to go back next year - I hadn't been there since I was 15 and it hadn't changed at all.

We went to Charmouth fossil hunting last Tuesday and were warned not to touch the cliffs towards Lyme Regis as they were very unstable.

I found some Fools Gold a couple of ammonites and something that ended in 'pod' quite easily without even digging

It was so hot the day we were there I went for a swim in the sea - and I don't like cold water.

I've been fossil hunting in Lyme Regis before but tend not to go there in high season as it gets mega packed - although they have now installed a couple of park and ride car parks outside the town - their council must have people with common sense on it - lol.

Glad you had a good time.

Dawn x

not at all! We didn't get any fools gold, but we did get some dark grey rocks with white crystals in it which are very pretty. I think we might give Lyme Regis a miss if it gets that busy. I was amazed at how quiet Charmouth was. I've not been to Beer but if we actually get round to camping then it'll be a place to go to.

Highcliffe near Christchurch is good, my brother in law and his family go there quite a lot, you can find sharks teeth and fossilised wood on the beach and bellemites, don't think I've spelt that properly in the mud, at the bottom of the dunes, really good we came away with allsorts.

The white crystals are probably quartz, sounds like you had a productive day then! :D
