Myrtle is moulting!

Recommended Posts

My first post (here goes - I'm a newie!)

I have had three hens for over a year and they are starting to moult for the first time since I bought them in June 08. However - they all have bare chests and tummies (only obvious when looking at them from underneath!) with no new feather growth - and this has been going on for months and months!

I wonder if bedding them on hay could be the problem - maybe they're hot? I know they should roost on the bars, but they look so uncomfortable that I lay a thick coat of hay upon them for maximum comfort! Am I causing the drafty feather-loss they've all experieced by being too kind? Does anyone else put hay on the roosting bars of their Eglu? It's definitely not mites, nor are they broody - any help MUCH appreciated!

Also have a limping Henrietta GNR:( - no sign of injury so considered calcium problem? The girls have Organic Layer Mash pellets with additional grit and oyster shell available and free range all day. Read somewhere that Limestone Flour may help if it is calcium deficiency, what do you think? Again, would appreciate any advice.

Well, I've done it - my first forum post ever! Thankyou x
