Phosphorus
Tasha sorry to hear your news. Haven't been on the forum much lately. The medicated chick crumb isn't a vaccination, it allows them to build up cocci resistance by coming into contact with it but not getting the full blown infection (the meds keep it at bay). Chicks are susceptible to cocci from about 3 weeks up until much much later (can't remember but definately still susceptible at 12 weeks). Having chick crumb up until 3 weeks would leave them unprotected after they stopped if sufficient resistance had not been built up, I think it is better to keep them on it at least until they go onto growers at 7/8 weeks, some people even use medicated growers until 16 weeks. Some people do use unmedicated crumb and have the cocoid to hand but it is a very fast moving infection and it is literally a case of reacting to the problem within hours to prevent the worst consequences. Obviously if the chicks are on un"chickened" ground there is much less risk but there is always the problem with wild bird droppings. I hope that your other chicks are okay and really am sorry to hear of the poor araucana. Unfortunately these things do happen, never easy though.
