noisy chooks - may have to say bye bye

Recommended Posts

We have an eglu so please be cautious as to this being a solution.

Good point, I have to say that it is specifically the PURPLE rablu that i was referring to when i said it was natuarally dark. I think the purple (purple eglu) and (cube purple) are darker inside than say the (cube orange) but the rablu does not have the gaps where the chook poo tray would be so this limits light too.

Sorry to hear you are having noise trouble. I can sympathise, having been through it all myself last summer. I have to say though I had 3 ex batts in an eglu at one point and they made as much noise in there as they did in the cube.

I resolved my noise problem with a very large blackout (olive green pvc) tarpaulin, not the standard crinkly type. Anything you cover it with has to be 100% blackout. BUT... shoot me down in flames..... I do cover the vents . Any chink of light will wake them up so it has to be totally dark. The tarpaulin skims the bottom of the cube so lets a bit of draft up towards the vents and also in the droppings trays. The long vent at the front is still clear. I use bungee clips from Omlet (can be bought from Omlet for 50p) to hold the tarpaulin down.

This resolved my problem last year and I have not had to cover them this year as they are quiet again for some reason.

It would be a shame to have to get rid of them when dark mornings are around the corner but I know how stressful it is.

Only person near me I know of with an Eglu is Pengy and hers is occupied at the moment. Unless anyone else knows one for hire in the essex area?

It doesnt fill me with dread having an eglu, would mean they would have more free ranging area which is a bonus. Would be easier to cover if I needed to.

I have an empty (pink eglu) + converter you are welcome to try I am in Herts so not that far away worth a go before you either give up your girls and see if there is any advantage to an Eglu ?

I've been away so only caught up with this.

Just to reinforce the earlier advice that the weed suppressor material folded 2 or 3 times is ace as blackout. I cover the cube down to the ground on all sides and hold it in place with a bag of compost on the roof ( I keep meaning to tailor it by sewing to fit so it's more elegant!) I don't have a run by the way.

They haven't suffocated yet. And do close the door. Leave them covered also till you want to let them out. I ignored any calls till 8ish and now it's quiet until around then. And I have a cockerel - much more a liability than hens!

The eglu ( especially the green) is easier to deal with but you do have to close the door and cover the run entirely. But you can cover the cube just as well.

wish I'd seen this months earlier...I cover mine with the fabric of an old white black out blind, the ones you use in childrens bedrooms and mine!!) and then cover with a green tarpaulin at night...and it stays put, if its windy I secure with big pots on top...(lazy version...or ties) and keeps my noisy girls quiet, until we uncover them, and then I used bribes in the form of extra treats to keep them quiet..hope it all worked out well
