My ex batts have arrived!

Recommended Posts

Well the girls are home and seem to like their Cube - they like it so much that they are refusing to come out this morning. I've even put a ramp in for them to make it easy for them but - nope - they aren't coming out.

They have decided that the egg port is the ideal toilet as it has a handy hole below for the poo to drop out - clever, these girls!

Paula's asleep and I've got work to do so I shall probably have to coax them out - cue much squwaking and pecked hands methinks!

They are so loveable - can already see personalities emerging although I still haven't worked out who's who!

Well, I came down this afternoon to find all girls in the run plus 2 eggs in the run and none in the cube. They'd also tipped over the plastic saucer I had put water in, (they now have a dog bowl) although I have seen them use the superglug which is good - they must have had something similar whilst 'inside'.

Tara: where have the girls been laying their eggs and do you know what time (ish)? Being new to this chicken thing I thought all eggs would be laid early in the morning. Just wondering how long todays eggs have lain in the run....

We've had just two eggs today but they are definitely settling in.

Putting them to bed last night wasn't too bad as it was twilight when I got home. I got in the run with them and just lifted them out of the carriers into the cube.

I spent some time in the run with them this afternoon and handled two very easily. They weren't struggling to get away after I'd caught them. I've just put them to bed as it's getting dark now and I think the two girls remembered me as they came over to me and let me pick them up. The others weren't much more difficult to put to bed. I'm making an effort to pet them a little before putting them to bed so they get used to friendly human contact.

I'm definitely bonding with them - been pecked a couple of times but it doesn't hurt. Only chicken related injury I've sustained is from a claw hammer while putting rungs on their ramp to stop them powersliding out of the cage!

All I know is I love them to bits!

Will take pictures tomorrow - I'm on the frantic merry-go-round of 4 x 12 hour nights and the last one is tonight. James has also been very busy the last few days what with his eBay selling and fixing peoples computers and getting our vehicles fixed/mot'd and looking after the girls and making them ramps and cubes...... he has been working hard

C O N G R A T U L A T I O N S to the proud parents ( & Foster Mum)

They look adorable & sooo happy. Well done you guys, introducing freedom & how to be a chicken to an exbatt .. brings tears to my eyes too. Maybe next time I'll feel confident enough to rescue :)

Will have a think on the glug, as although I don't use it daily, its proved an ideal substitute when we go on holiday & saves our neighbour worrying incase they knock over their favoured plantpot whilst she's at work all day & doesn't let them range til dusk!!!!

Well done & enjoy the love & joys of chook keeping xxx

James has put some more rungs on their ramp and we've just watched them put themselves to bed :D hopefully this means they will all be able to get out of the cube on their own - I'm not sure if Amethyst has spent almost all day in the cube until we insisted she get out earlier this evening

my ex batts will be ready next Saturday and I can't wait to get them. It was sooner than I thought and the eglu (cube green) is only arriving on Thursday so I hope there are no delays with the delivery - and I hope I can put it together in less than 2 days :anxious:

Reading everything on here, it makes me realise that I have made the right choice. I've been thinking about it for ages and had decided to go ahead - then disaster struck when I fell and broke my leg in early July so everything went pear shaped after that. :(

I'm back on my feet again now and have been sorting out an area of the garden where the cube and run will be located in the first instance.

Really excited and hope that the girlies will settle.
