xScrunchee
Hi, Seems like a silly question but does anyone know if we are allowed to discuss the keeping of cockerels on the Omlet forum or not? I understand that they are not allowed to be sold or rehomed on here but can we chat about them in general? ie-preventing early morning crowing etc? Fair enough if not-I wouldn't want to talk about things which are 'not allowed' and of course the Practical Poultry forum is an invaluble source of information regarding cockerels, breeding etc so if cockerel chat is not permitted-I will only discuss my laying hens on here Edited September 21, 2009 by Guest
laurmurf
well... I talk about my Basil and how very much we adore him! Haven't been chastised yet
smokiechicken1969
well im obsessed with my cockerel and have had a couple of posts about him now. everyone has been really supportive and had their own noisy boy stories. so im guessing general chat is ok? ive seen lots of photos of cockerels and read funny stories so if your in trouble, we all are sure someone will clarify soon. just make sure you dont speak about him before 7.30am i thought that was funny
xScrunchee
That was funny I only worried because the post has been removed for consideration by the moderating team and I was worried that it's because I spoke about Kev or the fact that I put him in the shed at night in a covered cat box Unless someone else posted after that with something I didn't see maybe Paranoid? Moi?
Lewis
I didn't see the last few posts but don't think there is a problem with talking about cockerels in general Maybe it was because it could have been percieved as looking for a home? xScrunchee
I didn't see any posts after your one That's why I jumped to the conclusion that it was perhaps something I had said Never mind-we'll find out at some point maybe
smokiechicken1969
ooooh! oh gosh i dont know. i know you've passed comments about kev and his antics and i have about mine too... im worried too now... lovely anh or redwing or claret will be along soon im sure finges crossed we're not in trouble

xScrunchee
I hope we're not too I doubt it though. If there is no problem with us speaking about them-we can't have done anything wrong
laurmurf
was it your original post about putting him in a cat box that gave me the idea? I certainly read about someone doing it on the forum and it gave me the idea - it's worked BRILLIANTLY! Every night when all the girls are taking themselves off to bed, Basil walks up to the back door: we open up and he walks over to the garage door. We put him into bed in his cat box in the garage which we then cover with a blanket although we make sure there's plenty of ventilation. He NEVER makes a sound until morning! He has coop cups with food and water in them, but doesn't seem interested until morning. When we get him out at 8am, he walks out, eats some breakfast and has a drink, stretches.... and then jumps up onto my arm to be carried out to the rest of 'his' flock. we adore our Basil and it will break our collective hearts if we find we can't keep him... fingers crossed then that the cat box keeps working
xScrunchee
Wow-sounds just like Kev At night he jumps onto my shoulder, arm, back or head and I walk him down to the shed. He then jumps into his box and I close the door (He hasn't learnt to do that bit yet ). I also have coop cups in there but he never eats or drinks until morning neither. I do cover the box with a thick throw but only sort of tented over the box to block the light out-of course he has plenty of ventalation-wouldn't want to smother the poor boy, he's my baby In the morning I open the box, he jumps out and has a stretch and a good ol' scratch before making his way down to the WIR Will be putting a heat pad in under his box during the winter and some ice packs if it seems like a very warm night
Griffin
I think we'll be trying the same with Boris when he finally becomes a man. Being an Orpington I'm hoping he'll be at least six months before he crows. He's so affectionate, adores the kids and the feeling is mutual. xScrunchee
They do seem to have great characters don't they? We love Kev more than we ever imagined we would. So far he hasn't upset anyone but if he did-I have back up plans
Redwing
Maybe it was because it could have been percieved as looking for a home? I think thats it Lewis, I think the wording could have been seen that way even though we know Teri doesnt want to part with him I love my two cockerels, they are great characters and as long as we cockerel owners dont be so irresponsible as to actively encourage others to get them without knowing their circumstances then I think we will be fine to chat away Edited for typo Edited September 21, 2009 by Guest
hillfamily
Hello Just to let you know that, yes you can talk about cockerels and offer advice but, you cannot make a rehoming request as it is against forum rules and that is why the 'Roy needs a home' thread was removed including all the replies it had received so far. I hope that helps to clarify the situation
xScrunchee
Thanks for letting us know I didn't even consider the fact that it said 'Roy needs a home' Der-that'll explain why then-not because of anything I said
Redwing
I must admit that I dont remember it saying that he needs a home either I read it that if Teri couldnt manage to keep him quiet he would have to go but that it wasnt ideally worded and could have been seen differently
Patricia W
I think its an equality thing really - cockerels have a heart too! My Phillip is not as cuddly as all yours ( his spurs are used to protect his girls) but he adds such a rich dimension to the life of the flock, I wouldn't be without him. abwsco
Well, I've just back from forcing my two to have cuddles. They don't half have girly screams when they're picked up I think that perhaps hormones are kicking in - 12 weeks old tomorrow - as there was a bit of argy bargy between them tonight but then again it was over food so who knows. Neither have crowed as yet although Mo our CL is still crowing and laying eggs so perhaps I can pass it off as her when they do Really think that they are going to end up as being our dinner with them being the breeds they are but we are going to try cockerel boxes and blackouts first.
