Tomatoes - can chickens eat them

Recommended Posts

As tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family it may be best to not give them too many... especially green ones or the plants themselves.

my 5 haven't read that part of the chicken manual they ate all the black cherry when they were ripe then started on the garden peach (yellow one) liked them so much they didn't wait for them to ripen properly scoffed six in as many days now they've started on my apples the ones that aren't ready till late october and november I whouldn't mind so much if they ate the small ones but they go for the big ones they've got 5 or 6 on the go all ready

It's right that you shouldn't feed them tomato leaves. I discovered this AFTER I'd been pinching my tomato plants out and throwing the spare bits out of the greenhouse door ... as with rhubarb, and various other plants that are supposed to be poisonous, no ill-effects but I won't do it again.

I've had a fantastic crop of cherry tomatoes this year, but due to inadequate watering by my house-sitter quite a lot of split fruit and blossom-end rot. I give all the damaged or manky fruit to my girls, and they love them - as said above, the fun to be had from lobbing one cherry tomato in amongst several hens is unbeatable!
