bantams help !!

Recommended Posts

You already have them and would like to know how to look after them??

What exactly is it you would like to know? If you ask specific questions I'm sure people will find it easier to answer them :D

Edited to add- You already have hens? Just looked through your old posts.

Are you asking how to look after bantams compared to normal sized hens?

hi there, i have three.

i hope im right in saying treat them the same as your other girls. gosh hope i dont offend a bantam expert now :anxious:

it may just be their personalities but i find them a little more shy than the others and more cautious of me. the two girls are also more prone to sneaking off and laying eggs in secret places rather than the nest boxes.

all three have gone through a moult where as the 'all common all dancing' hylines havent.

its also the banty girls that go broody, where as i've never had that once with the hylines.

mine bantams always like to perch up high where as the others arne't bothered too much. they also go to bed earlier than the hylines???

i also notice they like to go the dust bath more often than the others.

one of my bantams adopted a little day old chick and as mothers go, she was fantastic and took care of the chick long after they normally get bored.

i dont know if any of the above are bantam traits or just the experiences i have had of them, but i do know they're pretty little things and bring a lot of pleasure.

good luck.

load a photo when they get settled.

I wish i had that problem with my pekins mine stand on my feet and shout if i don't give them exactly what they want when they want it.

I treat them in almost exactly the same way that i treat the older girls. The only real difference is that their feet get checked on a more regular basis and if they have any mucky feathers i get one of the really gentle baby wipes and just clean it off. I also have had to trim their bottom feathers as they were too fluffy and kept getting covered in poo but that may just be my ones :)

Personality wise i have one who is relativly quiet and doesn't like being handled too much, One who has a bit of a temper and likes to be held somtimes but not for too long and one who has a temper tantrum with screaming and stamping at the drop of a hat and who gets over tired and has to be cuddled and very gentle rocked to sleep for her naps in the day. So generally speaking i think it totally depends on the chicken

Good luck

Beth
