Limping chicken.

Recommended Posts

just gone to check on the chickens and found that Tucky was very badly limping. she could barely walk. felt both legs and couldn't feel anything and she didn't squawk when I touched them.she isn't making a fuss but she can't walk and is just lying there pecking at the ground. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfy??? also , any ideas how long it'll take to heal or what it is???

Thanks,

Lydia

She might have landed awkwardly and sprained something.

I'd give her a bit of extra calcium.

I would also bring her in over night and let her rest and not try to keep up with her friends and roost.

If she can't weight bear tomorrow, I'd take her to the vet to be on the safe side.

I agree, rest is the best thing for now. Limping is the body telling you to rest when something is wrong so the less she moves the better. You could give Zolcal for extra calcium. Although she doesn't react to pain she will be in some degree of pain so I wouldn't leave it too long before getting it investigated and some pain relief from a vet. I have a chicken that seems to get a concussed foot from the cube ladder. If she is sore I put a padded bandage on just to cushion it until it gets better.

the only problem is that we have a no vet policy in our house.

Zolcal- cannot get it in our local pet shop. could I just get any calcium supplement for birds? is there anything I need to look out for?

You can get Zolcal online. It wont stop her limping or being sore but it wont hurt to supplement her generally.

thanks for all your help guys. she is now in an indoor guinea pig cage in our hall way being guarded by our friends collie we are baby sitting. every now and then we hear a contented cluck and her limp is already better. Hopefully with some rest she'll be better tomorrow.
