Grand Tour

Recommended Posts

Did anyone see the delicious Mr Kevin McCloud this evening on his Grand Tour?...and if so how fabulous were the current excavations at Pompeii...It's so easy just to imagine that it's all been excavated..but they are still finding new stuff...there were some mules they had found in a stable....perfectly preserved skeletons of course...what a snapshot of a civilisation

I haven't managed to get to Pompeii yet, don't know why, but it's definitely on my list now...

We have watched all 3 programmes so far. What's with all the sex stuff, is it him or the Italians who are and were obssesed?

His enthusiasm is infectious, I loved the old lasy and the Lotto last night she was so funny. A bit of a tourist attraction I think

We are going to see Kevin McCloud at the Cheltenham Literature festival next week. We were supposed to be seeing Keith Floyd but had those tickets refunded and got some tickets for Kevin instead.

I have been to Pompeii about ten years ago. It was without doubt one of the best experiences I have ever had. I went out of season when there was no crowds around. I fully expected a Roman Centurian to come round the corner.

I would recommend having a guide!

damn blast and bother - I really was considering cancelling our Christmas cruise - its going t cost too much for all the excursions. I do really want to see pompeii though, which is one of the stops, as is Rome and Egypt. Rome can be done fairly cheaply on public transport but not Egypt and the tours for Pompeii and vesuvius is coming out at $160 each for an adult - probably not much less for a child, Mum couldn't do that one either as its "strenuous". Pompeii alone is $99. Now I'm off to searh for private tours as they usually come out cheaper. Trouble is we will be there December 23rd - busy holiday time (and I'm sure Rome will be heaving the day before too!)

Pompeii has been on my "to do " list for as long as I can remember, lol. Altho, since my divorce and new found freedom I am ticking off my list at a remarkable rate! (done Loch Ness, Stone Henge, London, Edinburgh and Cardiff!) I watched Kevin Mc Cloud with my son last night and we did laugh at all the sex references. Not seen any of this series before so not sure if it was Kevins alter-ego(we dont hear that on Grand Designs!!) or if its just the filthy old Italians

It's amazing isn't it, if not slightly terrifying to realise that all the people were suffocated by 10cm of ash.

I just wish I was going to Grand Designs Live, I had a ticket and everything, but it was for the Friday and I'm at college then, so I gave it to my brother.

I love Kevin McCloud. My daughter is on the same course at uni as his son, and she has banned me from joining any KMcC groups on Facebook because it would be too embarassing if it was noticed by McC junior! He was the guest of honour at their Summer Ball, and she got to be presented with the prize for the best (themed) outfit by him too!

My husband is half-Italian and speaks the language fluently, so I already had a thing about Italian speakers!

Absolutely love this programme, and KM has such a lovely way about him - I could almost feel his vertigo last week when he was peering thru that little window high up in that dome. I got the wobbles in the Whispering Gallery at St Pauls!

Had to laugh when he fell off his stool, although I was a bit concerned about how near the edge he was. I love that he isn't all stuffy and serious about something that could easily be very boring - Long may he continue - other presenters please take the hint!

My parents went on a cruise and they called in at Pompeii and thought it was one of the most beautiful and surreal places they had ever been.

I have promised myself a trip to Rome if I ever come into money - I love history and architecture and spend hours on Google looking at places.

OK I@ve done my research now and both Pompei and Rome can be done by train from the port - Pompei is only 40 mins from Naples so taxi to station - train to Pompei - 2 min walk to excavations then a spot of lunch and back the the ship - no worries as its such a short journey and I doubt we will want to spend a lot of time there (James will get bored easily of "don't touch"). Rome is allegedly easy by train although a longer journey which panics Mum as she worries we will miss the boat BUT I@ve convinced her that if that was to happen it really wouldn't be a huge problem as Rome is the day before Naples so if we DID miss it we could just get a train to Naples and find a cheap hotel for the night.

She is less worried about Pompei and the train as we intend to just spend a couple of hours there - if we missed the boat there we would be sunk - next stop is Egypt 2 days later!

We are going to skip the pyramids completely - I can't imagine a worse ordeal than spending 6 hours in one day on a coach with James.
