Winter flowering pansies

Recommended Posts

I have two lots. One is in a planter already (cheap offer in garden centre) and has a few little flowers. The other lot I got free in a newspaper offer as plug plants. I've got them in trays on the bedroom window at the moment and they're growing quite big with a few flowers starting.

My question is, should I just stick the indoor ones out in the ground now? Is it too late for them to flower? Do they only do well if you put them in a lot earlier than this? Can you tell I've never planted these before  ?

In theory they flower all winter. In practice, they flower a bit but usually get set back by frost and bad weather and then recover in spring. It depends what kind of winter we are going to get. I think that the sooner you get them out and flowering the better. But others may have better advice!

I agree with the above: they should be about to flower before you plant them out. Mine then flower on and off during the winter, but truely bizarrely mine kept going all summer and are still flowering now, though looking a bit sad.

Obviously this only happened becuase I bought a colour I wasn't that keen on - they were much reduced in B&Q.
