Chicken blind in one eye??? *update*

Recommended Posts

Hi

Just noticed tonight that one of my ex-batt's eyes is a bit funny. Basically the black bit (pupil) of her eye is like a cloudy blue.....the yellow bit is fine. Could she be blind in that eye or have a cataract........or do you think anything else more sinister :(

She seems all ok in herself but does tend to be a bit slower getting to the treats out my hand or what I've scattered in the garden.

Googled this to try and get a photo and some advice but no luck.

Help! Anyone else had this

No - I've not heard of this

Unless there is any sign of infection then I wouldnt worry, having lived indoors most of her life I expect the ammonia plays havoc with their eyes :?

I have seen a few chooks on the forum that only have one eye and who are doing just fine

Unfortunately it is not uncommon.

redwing is right it is usually the ammonia especially in the bottom cages.

It could also be an old injury.

You could ring the rescue she came from, maybe someone would come & look at her for you to put your mind at rest.

It depends which eye it is in regards to problems she may have, but as long as she can find the food & water, and is not being picked on I would think she is ok.

You need to go to the vet.

Our Willow had a small greyish dot in her eye when she was little, we went to the vet and found out it was an infection. Due to the vet only prescribing gel and not antibiotics the infection took hold and the eye ulcerated and she lost sight in her eye. The eye is completely grey/white now. :(

Saying that though she is completely fine and functions fine with just the one eye.

Eye problems do need veterinary treatment asap IMO.

Thanks for the advice....booked in to see the vet on Tues Eve....earliest appointment for chicken expert!!!

Not sure how long shes had this but agree with what you guys have said in that its better to be safe and than sorry.

Shes seems ok in herself and there is no pus or anything...and trust me she is eating in fact she has just made me feel quite ill with the size of the worm shes just pulled from the garden and eaten.

I've put some citradel and garlic in the water so hopefully that will help some if there is an infection.
