chickenopolis
Should I do anything to add to the cube for winter? I know it's insulated but does anyone else do anything to make the ladies warm during the night.? I'm not going to add anything silly like a heater but I thought some kind of fleece blanket ontop of the cube (not sure how it would stay on it, but I am sure I can make it fit..) We've only got 2 girls at the minute, so plenty of room for them, but it might be a bit cold I thought? Could do with some advice, as we are only begineers (and am a bit scared of what the winter holds..)
Redwing
Check out a recent thread by Ollie n Lucy's Mum in the Eglu and Cube section, she has a smilar set up to you and asked the question a short while back
Olly
Really not necessary unless you're living somewhere exceptionally cold. I don't even close the door on mine unless temperatures are going very low - the Eglu and Cube are double-skinned for insulation, and your hens will snuggle up warmly together. If you put something over the top you risk blocking the ventilation holes.
Egluntyne
Same here....I rarely close the cube or Eglu doors.
The Dogmother
No need to worry, their body temp is much higher than ours - 105deg and they have feather duvets as well. I only ever close the cube door at night if it's well below zero. It is essential not to cover the Omlet (or any) housing as good ventilation is necessary for their health. If you're worried, then give them a little warm pellet mash in the afternoon.
chickenopolis
Thank you all for your useful advice - I will no longer worry about the cold. That means I will probablly now find something else to worry and fret over...
