Well it had to happen sooner or later that I would get a broody. However, I never expected 2 to go broody together, in October!

 

The last 3 days Peri and Grace have been cuddled up together in the nesting box, I am kicking them out (under protest from them) at every opportunity.

 

Don't they realise its getting cold, and really not a good time to be broody

 

I am contemplating whether I need to stick them both in a broody cage

Our pepperpot tends to go broody at the drop of a hat - have found dunking her in cold water did the trick, but then it was the height of summer

 

Maybe a nice, cool broody cage is the best way to go - at least with it getting colder they shouldn't stay warm and broody for too long!

i got soe for my broody that was broody for 4 weeks and about 1 week after having eggs she decided not to sit

Oh, naughty Peri & Grace They are unbeleivable arnt they, my Lola has been broody for nearly 3 weeks now, she must be ready to snap out of it soon. I tried dunking her in water in the summer and that didnt work, I have just been hoiking her out of the nest box whenever i can, she looks absolutely disgusted with me

Gosh, is that really right? Do you mean that in the colder weather they are likely to hatch a higher number of male? thats incredible.

I'd heard of that in reptiles but thought birds had sex determiend by their genes rather than temp?

My broody is sat on eggs, not sure the cockerel is operating 100% so will be nteresting to see if anything hatches She is living with the others still and they all climb on top of her to sleep! One nearly always sits in the Eglu with her, they seem to take turns including Tarzan I will move her to her own house this weekend so she can get some peace eggs due to hatch mid next week if thy are fertile

I managed to break the "broody spell" with Blossom by hoiking her out and shutting the door on the , which was fine as none of the Bitzas are laying yet and blocking off the nestbox at night.......not so easy for you....I'd suggest the broody cage is the way forward for Peri & Grace, uncomfortable as that may be

 

Blossom reverted from banshee, pancake bird who hollered at & pecked anyone who tried to move her against her will back to skittish minx in a few days thankfully I just wish she'd get back to laying again........

Cluckingmad is right about reptiles, I meant the time of year not temperature, sorry should have explained.

 

Its best to hatch in Spring/Summer as you're more likely to get more females; later on in the year you're more likely to get less chicks, as fertility will be reduced and of those chicks a higher percentage will be males. Its all do do with competition apparently, also younger hens, less than a year old, hatch out more cockerels.

 

... at least thats what I was told

JJ - Yes they have started shouting and getting stroppy (well Grace has!), in fact Ace came in to see what the commotion was and pecked me Ace and Grace hate each other, so why she decided to stick up for her I do not know

You are sooooooooooooo mean. They do raise a stink when they are broody, having said that the ones that are normally nice go all stroppy, and the stroppy ones go all sweet and lovely with my lot.

 

Took a peak at your photo's while I was awake at 3am. They are super chooks SC. I see you are in South Wales. I was born in Cardiff and my eldest Daughter lives in Builth Wells and teaches in the Rhondda Valley. Small world isn't it. x
