They fell into a box I just happened to have with me on sunday!

 

I think they are Cuckoo Marans, Maybe hybrids,, any ideas guys?

 

Think they are fairly young, 17-18weeks. What do you think?

They are lovely. How fortunate for you that they just fell into YOUR box

 

What are their feathers like? We've just bought a Maran Cuivree and her feathers are so incredibly soft we've gone particularly gooey over her.

They look like pure bred Cuckoo Marans, girls are quite dark, boys are lighter, scarily like Daisy but her comb and wattles are smaller than my boys who are younger so hopefully she is just a light girl

 

They dont look likw hybrids. Eggs should be dark and may be speckled yes

Tasha, Daisy is tiny! She has more of a comb than Maisie tho, but they are supposed to be the same age!

They didn't come from the auction in the end, we went to the breeders house...... How will I know if she's a he? Am worried now do I need to get a pic of her tail or something? Although apart from being smaller she looks no different to Maisei...

 

Fur, they are both really soft and have been pretty much hand reared so very tame!

Daisy's comb is very small so I wouldnt worry, it could be the pic making her look lighter

 

I will post pics of my boys and girl when I get home for you to compare but certainly my boys have very obvious combs and they are younger do dont panic

 

I would say that Maisie is certainly a girl, the girls are dark like her and sort of flecked, boys are lighter and have more white

Silly question but how can I tell if they are pures or speckledys??? Funnily enough they were advertise as Cuckoo marans, but because of the price I thought they were hybrids!!!!

They look exactly like pure breds

 

Hybrids have less defined markings and often have a ruff of lighter feathers round their necks, some have lighter tails, the markings should be regular across the body

Here's a speckledy! I'm jealous as I originally wanted a cuckoo maran. A speckledy is a hybrid Rhode Island Red crossed with a Maran. I do love her though. lol.

I see what you mean tasha. Your boys head gear is a much brighter red and more pronounced, they do look younger too, so I've everything crossed Daisy is a girl do the boys grow spurs or anything?

The boys wont grow spurs for ages (in the case of ours not at all as they are Christmas dinners sadly) they are already huuuuuuge but they still cheep and when they free range with the big girls they get told off all the time, its very sweet and funny

Well we are going to carry on regardless with Daisy until she decided to crow! She is the smallest, but I'm assuming that should she be a he she will grow much faster than the other one and grow massive headgear pretty quickly

yes it wiill become apparent quite quickly so I wouldnt worry

 

One selling trick is to put a younger cockerel with a pullet so they look the same age comb etc... similar, hopefully your breeder was a good honest one (as the majority are of course)

to be honest he had 20+ all running together, and he just caught 2, I said 2 different colourings so I could tell them apart!
