Is it normal to be so excited?

Recommended Posts

It sounds as if my life is going to be divided into BC (before chickens) and AC (after chickens) LOL!

I didn't sleep well, just like a child at Christmas. I'm looking out of the window for the Omlet van to arrive! I will definitely post photos as soon as I can.

And possibly organise a visit to Merrydale Poultry for some sweeties ASAP!

There is deffo a BC and AC.

I've felt pretty grim all week with a nasty cold - to be honest the 5 mins sorting them out in the mornings the past few days has been a trial. But it was all worth it this morning - as soon as I cleaned out the nest box, Rita pops in and settles down to lay. The sight of her just padding about in the nice new shreaded paper and getting comfy with the others checking to see if she is OK by standing in the doorway was heart warming and just the pick me up I needed.

OOOh! I am so excited for you! I didn't sleep the night before I got mine, and I had to go to London for a meeting, so my OH and DD picked them up. They had put them in the run and stuff by the time I got back, so I never saw them arrive - it was like someone else opening your birthday present!

I felt cheated! :(

Photos soon, they must have come by now!!!!

They're here!!! Darren arrived soon after 9am and was brilliant. Our cube was assembled in no time at all and I took lots of photos in case I can't remember how to do it in future.

Then our three girls arrived and they are absolutely lovely. I have called them Blodwyn (means white flower, so she is the black chicken, obviously!), Megan and Gwennie. Gwennie was going to be Myfanwy, but it is difficult to shorten and anyway, she is a Gwennie.

Blodwyn is definitely top chicken and very vocal. Her feathers are like velvet - really lovely. Megan is the boldest and will explore new things first. Gwennie is just a quiet little sweetie who gets on with it. They have met one of our cats, Ozzy, who has camped outside the run. There was a lot of clucking, but they have now settled down to eat and Ozzy has got frustrated. I elected not to have their wings clipped as they may have to fly one day to get away from a fox, if I can ever bring myself to have them down at the woods (I suspect not - I'll want them in the garden where I can watch them!).

The Glug and Grub got forgotten, so they have a grit feeder with their food in it and an old microwave dish for their water. I've put in a cat litter tray with dry compost as a dirt bath, and they have lots of lovely Hemcore in their nest box, although they aren't old enough to lay yet.

And...Here are My Girls :D:D:D

Blodwyn, the top chicken, and definitely the noisiest

I am a happy chicken mummy now.

Ooh, I meant to say too that the new Cube has got a much bigger door than the one I saw last weekend. You can easily get into the run now although you have to stay crouched down (it helps only being 5 ft 2). It makes it much easier. I got into the run to soothe them when the cat first appeared and it seemed to help. You can get in easily to put things under the Cube.

Nice work Omlet - a much better design.

As predicted, I caught DH talking to the chickens. I suspect he'll be cuddling them soon.

I'm not going to push my luck with Merrydale Sweeties just yet! I've been very lucky to be allowed these three, and I do want to be sure I can care for them properly before committing to more.

Sorry docsquid, I thought you had planned to get more straight away  My bad! I promise not to lead you astray for another few months yet then

Well, I haven't done the dinner, and lunch was late. I've fixed the winter shade as it is going to rain tonight. I moved the feeders so they are kept dry.

Then I stood in the run and Gwennie pecked my shoe laces so I thought I'd try to get them eating from my hand. Gwennie took one piece of corn but then the ice cream van went past and put her off. Meanwhile Megan was sort of squatting in the dust bath tray and making movements with her rear end. Her comb is bigger than the rest so I'm guessing she may lay an egg soon and this was a sort of rehearsal.

Gwennie got to the bottom step of the ladder but then flapped down again. I suspect that her quiet way of solving problems might actually get her a long way, and the others will end up following her, although they'd never admit it.

I just want to keep watching them!

May I suggest fish and chips for tea, sitting outside wrapped up warm in jumpers/blankets with hot tea/coffee watching the ladies till they go to bed?!

And don't forget - the excitement doesn't wear off... I've had my girls for a year and I STILL love getting up to see them every morning and saying goodnight each evening :D
