4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

I'm absolutely beside myself with excitement. The last time I got so excited was when it snowed last winter and I could ski to work!

 

The cube and chooks are arriving on Friday and I can't wait! I've been absolutely besotted with the chickens I've met over the last week thanks to kind Omlet members and the Omlet Hen Party I attended last Sunday.

 

I've been out and bought all kinds of chicken-spoiling stuff already - they have a nice new cat litter tray for a dust bath, a proper winter shade, lots of logs from our woods for climbing on, a little separate grit feeder and some Hemcore bedding, as well as mixed chicken corn as a treat.

 

Is it normal to be so excited about chickens? Particularly at my own somewhat advanced age?

Have had mine for a few years and still love going out to get eggs and have a chat with the hens.

I'm so relieved! It is just like Christmas coming. The neighbours, friends, all my relatives and even my DH think I've gone quite mad, but I'm sure they'll all be won over as soon as they encounter a real chicken for the first time.

 

Not sure the cats will be too amused though!

I agree with what everyone else has said, the excitement is totally normal (although you may have a 5 minutes spell later of complete panic, I did they day before my first girls arrived).

 

You will then fall completely in love with your girls, will do the obligatory egg dance when you get your first egg, will crave more girls and a Walk in Run and will find yourself looking at fruit and veg sections differently as you try and buy what you like, but also what your girls like

 

I started in April with 4 and a cube, I now have 12 and a large Walk in Run and am completely obsessed. Whats worse is so is OH, he set up the webcam so he could watch them in work, and now his whole office watches, as they keep it on a spare PC

Well, they are starting off in the garden. We need to know that they can manage the little steps in the cube and I want to be around them for a bit so I can get to know how they behave and therefore would be able to spot if something is wrong. I also want to train them to respond to the treats tin, as if we let them out at the wood they'll need to come when summoned!

 

Then the plan is up to the wood, as they will have a lot more space and will to some extent be in their natural habitat. But we'll have to take the decision when we know more about our individual chickens.

OMG - you have given me an idea.

 

I have fully fledged conversations with my girls - we chat about everything. I could sit and watch them all day - looks like I am going to be now.

Now there's another idea - a web-cam! Goodness me, how am I going to sell that to DH given that he's barely tolerating the idea of the Cube and chickens!

Hope you've got all your little jobs, housework etc done by now because you certainly wont be getting anything done after tomorro. Believe me, the house will go to rack and ruin, but who cares, you'll have CHICKENS!

BTW, be prepared to 'help' the girls into bed tomorro night as, if like mine, they are a bit wary of the cube ladder but dont worry, they soon get the hang of it
