craftyhunnypie
Help! I need to pick your brains. I am a home help for a lady who will be 90 on Sunday - what on earth can I buy her for her special birthday. She is a lovely young at heart lady & quite into her fashion. She loves animal prints & things from faraway shores. Please help. I don't want to spend a fortune either. Emma.x
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BATH-HAT-FUN-SHOWER-CAP-BOW-LEOPARD-ANIMAL-PRINT_W0QQitemZ270469992808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Home_Garden_Decorative_Accents_LE?hash=item3ef9449168 and some nice smellies? Lots of trad animal print hats on ebay for around a fiver. Or a nice scarf? Trip to a safari park?
Olly
In my experience by the time people get to 90 they don't usually want a lot of things, and their needs are usually mostly taken care of. What about just some flowers, or perhaps a pot-plant that will last longer and give her pleasure? Or a box of her favourite biscuits? One of my friends bought his elderly neighbour a Diptyque (sp?) candle for her 80th birthday! They're expensive though. Alternatively why not look at Oxfam online, they have gift stuff and a lot of it is from overseas.
bluekarin
what about these? http://www.scentedcandleshop.com/online_store/swazi-pillar-candle--small-animal-print-4.cfm Combines all of the things you mentioned she likes
chelsea
Does she wear jewellery? You can get some really nice costume jewellery now, maybe something like a nice brooch or pin... Animal print style scarf? Pashmina?
kitchens
I think flowers too. And also agree about people of a certain age not wanting much anymore (my nan has given most of her stuff away so that she doesn't have to clean it). I also think older people are less frivulous and so she would not be offended that you hadn't spent a fortune on her.
Lesley
Why not put together a hamper? - little treats that she probably wouldn't buy for herself?
craftyhunnypie
The hamper idea is very good, but she already indulges in stuff from Harrods & Booths regularly. Emma.x
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
She has stuff from Harrod's?! Sounds like she might need a butler then... Is this too racy? http://www.mypamperparty.net/Naked_Bemybutler_Services.html
craftyhunnypie
Ha ha - she'd like that! Might be slightly out of my budget though! She is a very posh lady, but full of fun. She was a catwalk model for all the top names in her youth. She still wears posh make up. She would probably appreciate some Chanel! Is this too racy? http://www.mypamperparty.net/Naked_Bemybutler_Services.html I hope I have someone like you buying me presents if I make it to 90! How about taking her out for afternoon tea somewhere nice.
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
How about taking her out for afternoon tea somewhere nice. WITH a topless butler...
sparkysmum
She sounds like a wonderful lady - I'd go for a silky scarf (but I'm not very imaginative). I'm sure she will appreciate whatever you give her. Ax
chickenanne
I'd be inclined to get her something small but perfect...so quality rather than quantity, if you see how I mean? The other thing is, I imagine that at 90 she will ahve a fairly pragmatic attitude toward "stuff"! Maybe a really lovely scented candle, or really nice bath foam, or flowers. Does she like to read? Have no idea how much Channel make-up and the like costs, would the budget stretch to it, nail varnish set perhaps?
debbier
My grandma (who is now 101!) doesn't like fresh flowers, and prefers silk ones. There are only so many times you can get these, really For her 100th birthday we had a big party, but she had a strict no-presents policy and asked that instead people donated money to the local children's hospice. It's so hard getting her presents anyway that this was a relief as thinking of what to buy her for such a special occasion was pretty hard! Plum
What about an experience day. This one is with owls there must be others across the country though from the sound of it she would probably prefer a pamper day. http://www.bobmorley.co.uk/vouchers.htm
sadietoo
What about a great film from her youth? .. Vic Pine (will come up on a google search ) specialise in films on DVD which haven't made it to DVD.(if you see what I've mean) I've just bought a friend a copy of Ken Russell's The Boyfriend, which has been unavailable on DVD previously, and she was very happy with it... Or (and i am always banging on about this so apologies for repeating myself) what about a charity present? Oxfam and Save the Children do them or The Goedgedacht Trust will plant an olive tree for a small donation which goes towards very good work in keeping South African children clothed fed and educated and provides olives for future harvests that will go towards keeping future generations of children clothed and fed and educated...etc
