Green Resolution

Recommended Posts

I thought this could be a good thread to start - maybe we can all come back at the end of the year and see how we've done :?:D

My main resolution is to make sure I continue with everything I'm doing that is "eco friendly" at the moment - even when I'm at my wit's end with a new baby :!:

And I also want to try my best to bring her up to respect the environment and do everything possible to be "green" (hopefully more than me  )

I already have my store of real nappies and the few baby products we've bothered with are as natural as possible, so - here's to a greener 2007 :D

Good luck Jackie.

I have changed so much since getting chickens and using this forum. :D If I sat down and listed the changes, I think even I would be staggered! So I would like to say a big THANKYOU to all who have inspired, advised and supported me in going greener.

This year I AM going to grow more veggies. :D

More veggie growing for as well.

The chicken run extension took away my veggie patch. I have my eye on a flower border

My green resolution is to get OH away from fairy power spray  and that very loud Barry Scott and his Cillit Bang has a lot to answer for

I'm going to try using less tissue products :? I actually use more since we moved here as we have a bio-digester and have to be careful what goes down the drains. I use kitchen paper to clean any cooking fat out of roasting tins instead of rinsing it down the sink ( ) and Carl is roasting more meat because he can................ sorry, because we have so much of it

I use Cotton Soft tissue products which are from renewable palnts but still use far too much :?

And I want to think harder about where my clothing comes from..............

So three or four sheets to wipe Lesley?:lol:

We had a (quite drunken) conversation with friends once, as she was complaining that their toilet was always blocked and that he was the cause. Amidst much hilarity, it was revealed that he used a great big wadge of toilet paper EVERY wipe....

She only uses 3 sheets per "go"...

One sheet less, every time would be a HUGE difference over a year, wouldn't it? :?:lol::D

oo-er...... I was thinking of starting with Kitchen paper, then moving on to tissues and eventually toilet paper. You can't rush these things you know!!

We're hoping to build a compost loo this spring/summer - but I'll only be weeing in it - and only in the warmer months!

Are you allowed tissue in a compost loo? :? - I suppose it ought to be leaves

Toilet paper use seems to be a forbidden topic doesn't it? But not here, eh? :)

Confession time!

In trying to budget and shop monthly, I have discovered that we (6 of us) use about 30 rolls of toilet paper a month :shock: Yes I was really shocked by this. I think I may have embarrassed the girls enough though and I suspect there has been more sensible use this month. In fact we have not run out yet and I still haven't done the January shopping - so a significant improvement, especially when everyone has been at home for 2 weeks. :)

Ration them! Keep the loo roll on a string around your neck and when they want to use your facilities, issue them with TWO sheets!

I'm full of great ideas today!! Off to write a list whilst my creativity is in full flow......

a list for OH, that is!

I am a fervent recycler now and a complete hater of plastic bags. I look at them in absolute horror now as if someone's given something truly horrendous. The Omlet bags fit very nicely into my small handbag - I squeeze 3 in! - and so I always have a bag for purchases.

Today DS has brought home a letter about a school trip TOMORROW! Apart from the fact that we need to provide a sketch book at this late hour, I am absolutely horrified that the school is requesting lunch in a disposable plastic bag and drinks in disposable plastic bottles.

I don't know what to do because I don't want to make my son the only one not with disposable items or distressing him by insisting he brings the items home. I can send sandwiches etc in biodegradable bags, but the bottle really needs to be recycled. I think I may have to make the point to his school, which I think has won awards for its eco-friendliness!!

Which brings me on to something which I should make my personal Green campaign. I believe that all public places selling food should have recycling bins available. Recently I went to an exhibition at Sandown Park. There was nowhere to recycle plastic drinks bottles and there should be. It's not difficult is it? (I took them home) Similarly at the Tate Modern in London, I had a cup of fairtrade coffee in a cardboard cup, but there was nowhere to recycle it and it just had to go in general rubbish. If the big places were to lead by example, more people may be converted.

Big places like racecourses, Wembley, concert halls, Wimbledon etc. where you get huge crowds of people purchasing glass and plastic bottles should have appropriate bins to recycle them in.

I must think how best to start a campaign!!

I like that idea Ginette - I've often wondered why there aren't more public recycling bins, but lacked the energy do do anything about it! Good for you! :D

We have become even more green this year; I have stepped up our recycling, am ridding the house of plastic bags. I now have enough logs to last us all next winter, so the boiler (gas) wil be used less often, I am growing some veggies (my garden is tiny), I will buy another compost bin once I've cleared room for it.

Lesley?.... what happened to your compost loo idea?

An interesting fact... in a lot of arabic countries, you don't find toilet paper by the loo - they have a nozzle conected up to a tap for washing your botty after using the loo. The only thing is, there's no warm air dryer to.....(I'll stop there)
