Early Layer

Recommended Posts

Our chickens used to lay their eggs at about 11am, however this time has been getting early and earlier. Now when we open the door to the eglu (at about 6 in the morning), there is already two eggs, and normally one of them is on the roosting bars. This is starting to cause a problem as during the rush to get outside, they often kick these eggs outside of the eglu and once they even stood on one and cracked it :(

Does anyone know anyway to make them lay later on in the day?

Or why they are laying so early in the morning?

Thanks

Or, looking at the problem laterally, remove the rush for the door by leaving the door open.

I'm completely new to this chicken-keeping malarky so feel free to tut, roll your eyes and smile knowingly to yourself, but after reading a few threads on the matter, and considering that native uk wild birds don't have the benefit of an eglu to keep them warm, but still survive the winter, its what we do without any problems. We have started to shut them in whilst its firework season, however.

Just me two-penn'th.

Mine that have/do lay do anything from first thing to about 4pm (I expect this will get earlier). Rita goes 27 hours or so. Grace was 25 hours.

Rita is laying now - and taking ages about it (probably as the weather is so awful) and I can't get out to clean yet..........3 times I've tried and 3 times I've got soaked. :(
