Scoobs
I've not had much luck since I got my chucks in June. I had 3 from omlet in an Eglu. Had to have one put down about 6 weeks later as the other two basically pecked her to death. Put a bumper bit on the culprit which helped the remaining friend and then she went and got a kidney infection. I've just spent the last month nursing her back to health and she started to look fine, was eating, drinking and scratching around. I came home today and she is dead so I'm down to 1 chicken. What do I do about a solitary chuck? I could rig up a run beside the eglu for them to get used to each other but I've no other Eglu or like that is warm and dry for the winter to keep them in separately. Advice is much appreciated? Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. I would get another hen as soon as is reasonably possible. At the same time, and conversely, because you have had a sudden death, I'd observe the other one for a few days as a sort of quarantine, in case the other hen died of something other than her recent illness. Article **here** re managing intros. Your idea about rigging up another run along side is spot on..... but security might be an issue. You could divide the run instead, as described **here**
Ain't Nobody Here
Very sorry to hear that . What bad luck you've had .
Scoobs
Thanks for the advice. I could easily split the run, or I have an old covered rabbit run that I have been using to keep pigeons off my broccoli on the allotment and if that is put on a patio next to the current eglu should not allow foxes to dig into it. It's just the question of night time, I don't have the rabbit hutch anymore or any other chicken house. What is acceptable in terms of shelter for the winter? Wonder if I could rig something up or modify the cat box with bubble wrap? Just guessing!
Space Chick
I have used a rabbit run for intros and a cat box as a temporary bed, but mine has been installed in a WIR which is more sheltered. Maybe you could cover the rabbit run with Shower curtains? So sorry you have had such a tough time
