maryeadrian
Hi everyone. I just read a lot of posts about noisy chickens and I still have a question. I have 3 girls, 1 almost 9 months old and 2 are 7 months old. My older one has been laying for several months. I'd get a bit of the chicken song, but not much. She lays at varying times of the day. My 2nd girl started laying about 4 days ago. Right now she starts laying at 6:30 or 7:00. The 3rd probably won't lay until Spring. Two mornings ago when my 2nd girl went to lay, the first went nuts. She paced back and forth making noise. This morning it was unbelievably loud. It doesn't sound like the chicken song she used to do which can be rather pleasant. This sound is like shrieking. Think this will pass and is just a transition since the 2nd one started laying? Or is it just a louder chicken song? We live in a city with close neighbors (San Francisco) and I'm getting worried I'll hear from one soon. I'll try all the things I've read. Just curious if this could be just a temporary adjustment. Thanks!
Raina
When one of my Girls (Lady Lay) Started to lay, she didn't make any noise but when my other girl (Orakiah) started laying she (Orakiah) made a right racket, she sounded like she was crowing but it was REALLY loud, this lasted for about 2 weeks she would lay her egg at 8am and it would last till about 8:
maryeadrian
Sounds like mine, but in reverse. Calliope (1st one) is the loud one when Olympia (2nd one) lays. So your only lasted 2 week? Is she quieter now? And a really loud rooster describes it exactly!
Space Chick
Hi Mary, One of my girls was like that when she first came into lay, she would make a racket before, during and after laying, be it herself or any of her sisters Now we only get a short announcement after her laying BTW - I am on vacation in San Francisco before the New Year. I LOVE your city, it will be my 4th visit. A lovely place Edited December 17, 2009 by Guest
Egluntyne
I have one hen who shrieks when others go to lay. We call her the midwife. She is shouting encouragement.
beulah59
I have one very noisy hen ... but come to think of it, I've not heard her for a day or two? So perhaps she's settled down?
Chook n Boo Mum
Ah yes the joys of the "somebody's laying........" chorus ...here's my lot in full flow I'm not sure how long they did it for, in days/weeks, but this chorus was about 10 mins long from memory....it always freaks the dogs out whenever I play it..and has me rolling around in hysterics Sha x
The Dogmother
I have one who does raucous seagull impressions when she's laid, I apologised to the neighbours in case they were thinking of complaining, but they said that they hardly hear it. chickenlegs
Hi, I had the same problem and as I live on a housing estate worried that neighbours would complain but after reading through this site came across some good advice; when your hen starts time how long she carries on for and your probably find that it is only for a matter of minutes, this compared with the noise made by others in what is a built up area contributes only a tiny fraction to the background noise we all live with everyday and if this does not comfort you you could always resort to a water pistol, although your neighbours might think your mad standing outside squirting a chicken in the early hours Theresa
maryeadrian
Ahh...so I'm not alone! Space Chick - Hope the weather is nice when you're here. Funny, I've always wanted to go there! Wild Mum - Great video! Yes, that pretty much sums it up. And I didn't think of the squirt of water! That would be a site! I tried setting up another nest in the run to give her options. (Didn't really think it would work, but willing to try.) Then did all my chicken chores in the evening so I wouldn't wake them early. Today she was her normal self and Olympia was actually laying when I went out at 7:00. She must have started early because there was her egg at 7:10! I'm sure it'll happen again. But at least I know it's "chicken normal". Thanks everyone. I love this site! Mary
Valkyrie
For one minute I thought they were doing "The Ride of the Valkyrie"! We don't get any noise at all with Squirt or Sioux (when she decides to perform that is). Tipsy yet to show us what she's made of. Apache whinges and whines when Sioux is in the nest box (swings and roundabouts come to mind here) and she whines when she needs to go in, then whinges when she can't see the others when she comes out. Bokking they usually leave to Tipsy now - who shouts when there is a cat around.
chelsea
I am glad I'm not alone either! My two little ones make noise prior to laying AND egg announce after aswell! Then they get the rest of the flock going aswell. The two ex-batts I am holiday sitting for also "pre lay" bokkers also.
