art12345
Am gutted today to find my ten month old buff pekin poppet had passed away in the nest box. She was fine an hour earlier was very healthy and active and ive been very concientious about making sure they have unfrozen water and stuff like porrage to eat. Has even had a snuggy safe to keep her and her two sisters warm. She had been laying every other day which we thought was amazing considering the weather. The only thing i noticed on her body that was unusual was what looked like a partial prolace as there was a bit of red flesh protruding from her vent(it wasnt there yesterday as i checked her over). Could a prolapse have caused death so suddenly? Am especially worried as i have 6 other chickens, three with colds to consider(have been treated by vet). I have brought the other two inside so have now have 6 chickens living temporarily inside whilst we have this perticularly cold snap. Can anybody offer any explination? Space Chick
These things can happen sadly I lost my Martha due to a prolapse, she had just come into lay, she had only laid 3 eggs before we lost her. Mother nature can be cruel, so don't beat yourself up, as it sounds like your girls are well loved and cared for
Olly
Really sorry to hear that, all I can say is that chickens do sometimes die unexpectedly and without warning, even young ones, so it's probably not connected with the cold weather - she'd have shown that she was suffering if that was the case. I wonder if she had some sort of blockage or problem with her oviduct, and that might have led to the symptom of a partial prolapse and to the death, but I'm just guessing really - however please don't worry that this is going to spread to your other hens, the chances are it's just one of those things. Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. Sounds as if the stress of the prolapse was too much for her.
