I went to check on my girls before going to bed and the inside of the eglu was really frosty and they both felt cold and Their Glug was frozen Solid too, i last checked it at 6pm.

 

I told my mum and she told me to bring them in tonight,so they are now in a pet carrier at the bottom of my bed.

 

They seem a little happier now & are making quiet clucking noises

Ahhhhh, I'd do the same except I've got 26.

Hubby put a 150 Watt bulb in his chicken house yesterday afternoon & they gathered under it for a warm up until bedtime. I wonder if a heat lamp may be a good idea in there this time of year? Or maybe one of those reptile heat pad things? Could someone advise please?

Well they woke me up as soon as they could see light lol

 

and as a thankyou present, one of them left me a very warm egg in a very warm pile of poo

 

I made them some mushed up layers pellets with some poultry spice and grit which they ate in seconds

 

But if it's cold again tonight they won't be sleeping in my room,they'll be sleeping in the bathroom,They sounded too much like the Dilophosaurus from Jurassic Park

 

 

Oh and don't use a reptile heatpad,i've read many stories that they can over heat (even with a thermostat)and burn the animal, i think a heat lamp would be your best bet

if you put a heatlamp near the water will it also stop it freezing?

Heat lamp is a huge boon. My girls warm themselves under it in the morning and lounge around chatting at various points in the day. But there is nothing to substitute for fresh water - although I do have a small bowl of water close to the heat lamp and it doesn't freeze when I put it out in the morning, whereas their other water develops ice bits during the day and I have to change it.

 

I am still laughing about Raina's chickens though.....they must have thought they were in heaven!

I've already warned my OH that the conservatory will become a chooky house this weekend if the forecast is right. I bet whoever invented laminate flooring never thought it would be considered ideal for indoor chooky hygiene!!

 

It was -11 outside our back door last night, which is where there hen house is at the mo, with forecasts down to -20 over the weekend and into next week.

Lol, i've but a really thick duvet over the eglu for them today.

 

Lady Lay didn't like it when i took it off to check for more eggs lol.

Well i got the pet carrier ready and put a ho"Ooops, word censored!"er bottle in it, i put the girls in and they both cuddled up to the ho"Ooops, word censored!"er bottle

 

I've tried to make the bath all nice for them,i've put 2 bath towels,then a Double duvet in the bath,then the pet carrier then another towel over that (our bathroom get's cold)

If putting chooks in a box with a lamp above make the lamp high up or make the box big enough so they can move out of the heat if they need to, I would say though that chooks indoors dont need a heat lamp too unless they are ill

 

I have three reptile heat mats and they do a good job on poorly or young chickens, just make sure the wattage isnt too high and that again the bird can move away from them if it wished, a covering of a towel or shavings/aubiose, the thicker the layer the less heat will get through

OK I used to have 4 black rocks and they were very hardy. I now have 4 bantams three of which are frizzles so there feathers dont keep them as warm and my wife is taking the mickey as I have put them in a cardboard box lined with newspaper and straw for the night. they are in the kitchen by the back door there is a drought but compared to outside I am sure its heaven.

 

Do you find this perks them up as they have been fed up and there crops are small and pink not big and red. I think its the constant long periods of cold weather?

Raina that happy cluck clucking when you bring them in from the cold is the BEST sound

The memory of it will always warm your heart.

The best place I found to buy heat lamps was Wells poultry with excellent advice.

They have to be either 60 or 90cm (sorry cannot remember which) from animal or flammable anything, but saw some at poulrty breeders built into their wooden hutch/cages

There is zero chance of them overheating under one in a WIR in this weather, but they DO still need room to get away from it if they wish.
