Jillus
I am not sure if this is the right place to post but I am sure it will be moved if need be! A few weeks ago we had a grey squirrel living in our roof and walls (we have an old house with gaps between the stone walls and the plasterboards) We had spotted it coming in under the tiles, anyway we put down some poison in the attic and the bait was taken (this was on the advice of the hardware shop ) and after a while we heard no more. Now we have a horrible smell coming from somewhere and I think it is through the walls, I think the animal has died and is slowly decaying. Has anyone any ideas about how to mask the smell successfully and also how long do you think it will last. We have looked in all the obvious places for the animal but assume it is well hidden somwhere.
Egluntyne
We had a similar experience when some mouse poison did its job. I put a couple of dishes of Bicarbonate of Soda down and it seemed to help a bit.
Valkyrie
Sorry I have no idea how to sort that out but you do have my sympathy because I expect it's very unpleasant. Murray's cousin had some work done in her old cottage and in between the wattle and daubed bit (it's a mix of pine branches in one part, stone in another too) they found a dead squirrel - but that had been there for goodness knows how long because there definitely wasn't a smell. Needless to say someone must have smelt it, but it does go - how long I have no idea. (((hugs))) for you.
The Dogmother
Sounds like it might be the squirrel. The usual tack is to use a poison which dehydrates the body so that it doesn't smell. My two feline monsters often bring mice in, then hide them for me to track down when they start to smell
stoice
Urgh, poor you Haven't tried this myself but I'd looked into this for when/if I got any nasty whiffs from a dead thing under my shed or in my garage... clicky thingy
Lesley
We have had the same with rats/mice under suspended floors - the smell usually lasts about a week (......and it only appears when you're expecting a houseful of visitors )
Jillus
Been burning very strong candles overnight and smell is not so bad. I looked at those smell absorbing bag things but no idea where I would put them and OH says it does not qualify under this years 'only buy essential stuff' regime. I am going to try the bicarb thing and also just steer clear of the room it is in. Hopefully with it being cold it will dry out quite soon and as there are no flies about we should not have the risk of maggots either. Oh the joys of country living! Still no visitors expected soon so no chance of being accused of being a secret body snatcher
The Dogmother
The smell soon goes Jillus.
Alis girls
I really sympatheise, we were trying to sell our old house when mice moved in In panic got 2 lovely rescue cats one male and one female and they were spayed by RSPCA before we got them. When I went to pick them up the male stank that horrid male cat wee smell. vet nurse assured me it would go in a couple of days - 2weeks later and having spents pounds on every air freshner known to woman and windows open in February it was only just going. Needless to say no put an offer in but not sure if it was that. We did eventually move as did mice and still have our lovely kitties minus whiff. I do hope it goes soon. Squirrels are a pest on a par with foxes.
