Jewels
Hi I've had my two girls for 2 years this summer and at last thinking of adding to them. I have a cube so they rattling around in there a bit! Was thinking of White Stars, they look lovely but petite and worried would get bullied by bigger birds but love the idea of white eggs. I also like Amber Stars and Speckled Stars. Does anyone here have any of the above breeds and can tell me what they like. I really want a quite docile breed. Thank you all
tom123
White stars are very pretty but can be very flighty. They will lay a large white egg and plenty of them! Amber Stars are very pretty, docile, friendly hens who can become very tame. They will lay a tinted/brown egg and, again, plenty of them! If you want a quite, docile breed go for the amber
Redwing
White stars are leghorn hybrids so are lighter, faster and a bit more flighty Not sre about Amber stars but there is a hybrid called an Amber Lee that is not leghorn based and is a lot calmer, perhaps they are different names for the same thing? I think a Speckled Star may be another name for a speckeldy which is a Cuckoo Marans hybrid and they are pretty calm birds
Jewels
thank you, what about Buff Orpingtons?
tom123
Yep, Amber Stars are the same as Amber Lees Buff orps will be a lot calmer and more docile but you wont get as many eggs and they will probably go broody throughout the summer. Remember they are also a lot bigger so think about the accommodation
Redwing
Buff Orps are very sweet calm birds but biiiiiig. The bantam buff Orp isnt a lot smaller than a hybrid so is a consideration if your house/run space is limited
sjp
Ambers are supposed to be a cross of a white rhode island red and a rhode island red not sure which way round
Space Chick
I have a white star, she lays huge white eggs. However, she is very flighty and has never crouched. She is not a girl who likes a cuddle, but she does like to jump on my lap on her terms She loves treats and comes dashing from wherever she is when she sees me come out with the treats She is also my flock protector and takes new girls under her wing She is a fab girl and I adore her. She also loves a good dustbath, as indicated in this photo She is a white star.... honest
Laura & CTB
One of my original girls, Prada was an amber star- very placid most of the time although she did go through a phase of pulling Gucci's feathers out. Stella is my white star and she is a real cutie pie - completely fearless but very tame. Quite vocal though!
Redwing
Wow, beautiful girl Laura
GillC
I have one amber star, called rather unimaginatively Amber She is a slim but regular layer. However what I love most about her is her personality. She is amazingly tame and friendly - a real people lover. She's a little scamp and quite adept at escaping through the smallest gaps in the netting around their free ranging area (to keep them from the rest of the garden). Having had one Amber Star, I always want to have an Amber Star in my flock. Eggs plus loving nature. What more could you want (ex-batts)
tooties
I too have an amber star and she is the friendliest of all my chooks. Always wanting to be exactly where you are - I have caught her having a sneaky drink of my tea before! As someone said, I would always want one in my flock now
Cinnamon
I have always had a white star I'm my flock & always will,as the eggs are fantastic. They are flighty, bit have oodles of character. I also have an amber star,& she is a lovely hen, with really pretty colouring. ....there are some photos in my gallery. Get one of each, plus, as you have the space, another hybrid that takes your fancy when you are at the chicken shop
Egluntyne
I have an Amber Link, which is the same difference as an Amber Lee or Star. She is very pretty and docile.
shoura
My white star is great, slim but bold and the best layer of my four, lovely big white eggs. She also loves her dust bath and I immediately recognised her in Space Chick's photo!!
Falkor
I have an Amber Star called Snowball. She was skitty to start with but when she started laying she calmed right down and is now the friendliest of my LF. She is calm, docile, lays lovely big eggs most days and will happily be picked up I also have a buff Orp called Brandy She is not fully grown or standing up straight in this picture but she is BIIIIGGGG! She is fairly calm and trudges about....elegance is not a word that I would use to describe her! She is a grumpy bum and not a very nice person really but i still love her! But then Gin and OSH, my other Orps are SOOOO laid back and docile I sometimes worry that they are little deficient in the brain department Edited February 2, 2010 by Guest
Gallina
My Amber Star is not the most beautiful of my hens (the amber bits are very splodgy); but she is the most intelligent hen I have ever had.
Chucky Mama
We have 2 Amber stars, one is slightly larger and is white/cream and the other has brown on her wings. Both are extremely friendly and lay every day all year round. Both are more than capable of looking after themselves. One keeps the dog in her place
Tutti Frutti
I've always wanted a White Star but when we went to look at some at the weekend, there were more up on the roof (and really high up!) than in the run So VERY flighty indeed But I still love her shape - beautiful elegant body with that tall, proud tail. And large white eggs to boot. Lovely, just not suitable for my suburban garden... I think :
BarbaraJ
I read the white stars were flighty so don't think I'd want one. I started with an Amber star and they are lovely. She was my friendliest hen
